About the role
At Thorlabs, we design and manufacture components, instruments, and systems that transform the world by identifying, enabling, and accelerating key photonics (i.e., light-based) technologies. This position requires comprehensive knowledge of mechanical components and systems. The Engineer II is responsible for researching, planning, and designing mechanical products and systems, directing and coordinating activities involved in fabrication, operation, application, and repair of mechanical products and systems. Although the position is located in Newton, NJ, occasional duties may be required at other Thorlabs locations.
Responsibilities
- Designs opto-mechanical products for use in instruments, controls, machines, and mechanical systems.
- Analyzes and researches design requirements and specifications to determine feasibility of design or application.
- Plans and directs engineering personnel in fabrication methods based on expected manufacturing quantity usage.
- Directs and coordinates fabrication and installation activities to ensure products and systems conform to engineering design and customer specifications.
- Handles data entry, document revision, and control in the Thorlabs ERP system.
- Leads the design of complicated projects and R&D efforts to expand business.
- Influences and plans product test procedures to ensure designs meet target specifications.
- Mentors peers, technicians, or new hires.
- Designs custom products (specials) and collaborates with planning, manufacturing, and assembly to meet customer requirements.
- Meets company standards for quantity and quality of work, adhering to all company policies and procedures.
Requirements
- Minimum 4 years of experience in mechanical engineering design.
- Experience designing products that achieved commercial success.
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field.
Skills
- Excellent statistical data analysis and problem-solving abilities.
- Working knowledge of SolidWorks or similar 3D modeling software.
- Strong innovation skills.
- Effective reporting of progress and problems through written or oral communication.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.
- Flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
- Strong knowledge of optomechanical design and implementation practices.
- Proficiency in MS Office and communication tools is a plus.
Physical Activities
- Work may be active, involving standing or sitting for long durations and/or performing repetitious tasks.
- May lift or move objects up to 20 pounds.
- Must grasp, manipulate, or assemble parts and components that are often very small.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but may be noisy at times.
- Must wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as masks, glasses, gloves, and specialty garments.
- PPE and training allow for the safe handling and processing of chemicals like adhesives, lubricants, and solvents, as well as the safe operation of job-related equipment and tools.
Pay
Pay range for this position is $76,000 - $110,000 depending on experience.
