Mechanical Engineer - Human Performance and Robotics

IHMC is seeking engineers and scientists for the design of wearable devices, including passive and actively actuated exoskeletons, aimed at enhancing human performance. Over the past 17 years, IHMC has developed legged systems such as bipedal robots (M2V2, Planar Elliptical Runner) and legged exoskeletons like Quix. The team is also establishing a new human performance center.

About the Role

Individuals hired will join an interdisciplinary team to design and develop new wearable robotics for improving human capabilities. Current projects include:

  • Developing wearables to extend the working life of DOE Environmental Management personnel by reducing musculoskeletal strain, in collaboration with Sandia National Labs and Georgia Tech.
  • Creating a novel powered lower-body exoskeleton to assist EM workers in carrying heavy PPE loads.
  • Advancing mobility assistance devices for individuals with spinal cord injuries, focusing on understanding and addressing limitations of current approaches.

We seek candidates with backgrounds in mechanical design, controller and software development, biomechanics, and human factors.

Ideal Candidate

We are looking for individuals passionate about wearable robotics and exoskeletons, with experience working on multidisciplinary teams to develop cutting-edge wearable systems. The ideal candidate:

  • Has experience designing and conducting human-subject testing.
  • Possesses strong communication and documentation skills.
  • Is capable of working both independently and in a tight-knit team.
  • Has knowledge of prototype development and fabrication techniques (e.g., machining, 3D printing), with a focus on minimizing weight while maintaining durability.
  • Is familiar with failure analysis, composites, and advanced manufacturing.
  • Has experience with mechatronics, control theory, robot kinematics, dynamics, and control concepts.
  • Understands human factors and human biomechanics.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field, with at least 2 years of experience.
  • Authorization to work in the United States.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with articulated robots, including ergonomic and biomechanical assessments.
  • Experience with wearable systems and electromechanical systems (sensors, motors).
  • Experience designing physical interfaces for exoskeletons.
  • Knowledge of human biomechanics and human factors.
