Mechanical Engineer - Energy Production

Core Responsibilities

  • Manage capital and operations and maintenance (O&M) projects, including coordination of scope, schedule, and budget
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders and external vendors and contractors to support project development and execution
  • Note: This is not an all-inclusive list.

Design and Testing

  • Design and conduct tests on power plant equipment; analyze results and provide recommendations for performance improvement
  • Develop detailed test plans and procedures that ensure safety, operational continuity, and coordination across impacted teams

Troubleshooting and Installation

  • Troubleshoot plant equipment issues and recommend corrective actions to resolve operational and maintenance problems
  • Support installation, startup, and commissioning of new equipment; provide technical oversight and issue resolution

Data Analysis and Training

  • Analyze operating data and logs to identify trends, diagnose issues, and improve system performance
  • Contribute to the development of capital and O&M budgets by identifying needs and recommending projects
  • Affirmative action statement: Assist in the development and implementation of standard operating procedures and training programs

Documentation and Compliance

  • Maintain and improve documentation control and change management standards for power plant systems
  • Participate in an on-call rotation to provide after-hours technical support

Skills and Technical Knowledge

  • Knowledge of power plant systems (boilers, turbines, generators, pumps, valves, steam systems) – Intermediate
  • Understanding of plant performance metrics (efficiency, heat rates, fuel characteristics) – Intermediate
  • Familiarity with control and instrumentation systems – Intermediate
  • Foundational to intermediate knowledge of electrical systems (relays, transformers, breakers, auxiliary systems) – Intermediate
  • Project management fundamentals (scope, schedule, budget coordination) – Intermediate
  • Data analysis and technical reporting – Intermediate
  • Troubleshooting and root cause analysis – Intermediate
  • Strong organizational and time management skills – Intermediate
  • Safety and compliance awareness (industrial and environmental) – Intermediate

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline from an accredited university
  • Valid driver’s license required
  • Prefer four or more years of experience in power generation or a related industrial environment
  • Ongoing learning through classes and seminars related to power plant and utility technologies

Work Location

In-person role based at power plant locations in Madison, WI
