About the role

Plans, schedules, conducts, or coordinates detailed phases of mechanical engineering work in a part of a major project or in a total project of moderate scope. Performs work which involves conventional mechanical engineering practice but may include a variety of complex features such as conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of conventional materials, and difficult coordination requirements. Requires broad knowledge of precedents in the specialty area and good knowledge of related specialty practices.

As a fully competent mechanical engineer, plans and conducts work requiring independent evaluation, selection, and substantial adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria. Devises new approaches to problems encountered. Provides procurement, field engineering including walkdowns, modifications/maintenance, and testing support.

Responsibilities

• Perform hydraulic analysis and heat-transfer analysis.
• Prepare design-change packages and equipment-qualification documentation.
• Apply codes, standards, and procurement/design specifications.
• Size valves, orifices, and pumps; select HVAC and heat-exchange equipment.
• Conduct root-cause analysis and physical-installation walkdowns.
• Ensure compliance with fire-protection (Appendix R), MOVATS, PSA, and design-basis requirements.
• Coordinate work of multidiscipline engineers, CAD technicians, and support staff.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related engineering discipline from an accredited curriculum.
• Minimum 2 years of mechanical-engineering experience plus 1 year of nuclear-power-plant experience (or equivalent post-graduate education).
• Ability to obtain and maintain unescorted nuclear-plant access and S-3/S-4 medical qualifications.
• Willingness to assume rotational “on-call” assignments (24/7 availability) and work rotating shifts with overtime as needed.
• Willingness to travel to plant locations and accept temporary field assignments.

Qualifications

• Licensed Professional Engineer (desirable).
• Membership in professional/technical societies (desirable).
• For Fire-Protection roles: member-grade SFPE and all designated restrictions; Fire-Protection Engineering degree recommended.
