About the role
The Mechanical Engineer I performs professional mechanical design and drafting work to support product and system development on medium scale projects. This role focuses on creating accurate 3D models, engineering drawings, and documentation under general guidance while developing proficiency with company standards and engineering practices.
Responsibilities
- Model and create parts and assemblies in SolidWorks for assigned projects
- Create and revise fully detailed engineering drawings in compliance with departmental standards
- Create Bills of Materials (BOMs) for fabrication and production
- Ensure design documentation and changes are accurately processed through the Engineering Change (EC) system
- Maintain compliance with drafting standards and departmental procedures
- Check engineering drawings for completeness, accuracy, and manufacturability
- Assist in resolving design or assembly issues identified during production
- Maintain organized and accurate design files, drawings, and supporting documents
- Support prototype and initial build activities as required
- Coordinate design work with other departments to ensure alignment with project objectives
- Communicate project status, design intent, and technical information effectively to cross-functional teams
- Develop proficiency with company-specific design tools, processes, and documentation systems
- Perform additional duties as assigned
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or in an engineering-related field
- 0 to 3 years of using CAD software (preferably SolidWorks)
- 0 to 3 years electro-mechanical engineering work experience in a production or manufacturing environment
- Equivalent work experience of at least 3 years may also be considered
- Knowledge of SolidWorks for part modeling, assemblies, and detailed engineering drawings
- Knowledge of manufacturing methods, materials, and design-for-manufacturability principles
- Skilled in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, etc.)
- Ability to manage some projects simultaneously under supervision
- Ability to communicate effectively with peers, supervisors, and production staff
- Ability to apply accuracy, organization, and attention to detail in design work
Qualifications
- Basic knowledge of electro-mechanical switchgear
- Basic knowledge of sheet metal design
- Knowledge of engineering drawing guidelines and standards
- Ability to communicate technical information across engineering, production, and leadership teams
- Ability to identify opportunities for design or process improvement under supervision
- Basic ability to integrate customer, production, and supplier feedback into design refinement
Physical requirements
- Frequently required to stand; use hands to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; talk and hear
- Regularly required to walk and reach with hands
- Frequently required to sit and rarely required to climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
- Uses computer keyboards often
- Must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
- Views computer monitor often
Work environment
- Occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts
- Rarely exposed to airborne particles or chemical agents
