Mechanical Engineer
About the role
This Mechanical Engineer role focuses on the design of heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems for a wide range of commercial, corporate office, residential, retail, and medical projects. You will develop complete mechanical designs, including plans, schematics, equipment selection, load calculations, system narratives, specifications, and layouts, while supporting due diligence and feasibility efforts. The position involves close collaboration with a multidisciplinary design team, regular interaction with project consultants, and occasional out-of-state travel for site visits.
Responsibilities
- Design HVAC systems for commercial office fit-outs, high-rise buildings, campus environments, residential, retail, and other facility types.
- Develop detailed mechanical design documents, including plans, schematics, equipment selections, load calculations, system narratives, and specifications.
- Create and refine system layouts using AutoCAD and BIM/Revit, ensuring coordinated, clash-free designs with other disciplines.
- Perform MEP due diligence reviews of commercial properties and prepare comprehensive due diligence and feasibility reports.
- Support construction administration activities, including responding to RFIs, reviewing submittals, and participating in field inspections.
- Conduct field investigations and site visits to verify existing conditions and ensure that designs are practical and constructible.
- Attend meetings with project consultants, clients, and internal stakeholders to discuss design concepts, progress, and technical issues.
- Work in close contact with the entire design team, collaborating with electrical, plumbing, and other engineering disciplines.
- Provide engineering support and mentorship to engineering staff, contributing to a collaborative learning environment.
- Comply with established group and company standards, procedures, and quality control processes throughout the design and documentation phases.
- Design and coordinate high-rise and campus HVAC systems, including central cooling and heating plants, VAV distribution systems, and packaged rooftop units.
- Participate in regular out-of-state travel for project site visits, typically once per month for one to two days per trip.
- Contribute to a culture of open communication by engaging with colleagues in a shared workspace and participating in collaborative problem-solving.
Requirements
- 4–10 years of mechanical HVAC design experience within a mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) consulting environment, with 4–8 years strongly preferred.
- Strong proficiency with Revit, with the ability to perform the majority of design work (approximately 95%) in a BIM/Revit environment.
- Hands-on experience with mechanical engineering design, including HVAC system layout, equipment selection, and load calculations.
- Familiarity with Trane Trace and HAP or similar tools for performing HVAC load calculations and system analysis.
- Experience with MEP due diligence reviews for commercial properties and the ability to translate findings into clear reports.
- Experience with retail, residential, and hospitality projects in addition to commercial office fit-outs is a plus.
- Exposure to medical centers and light laboratory projects is beneficial.
- Ability to prepare clear and concise due diligence and feasibility reports for a variety of property types.
- Self-motivated work style with the ability to manage tasks independently while contributing effectively to a team.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate closely with multidisciplinary design teams.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited college or university.
- Ability and willingness to travel out of state for site visits approximately once per month.
- Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) certificate is desirable but not required.
- Comfort working in an open, highly collaborative environment with frequent interaction across all engineering disciplines.
- Interest in professional growth and career advancement within a consulting environment that offers accelerated learning opportunities.
