Job Title Mechanical Engineer – Asset Management Location: Granite City, IL (St. Louis Metropolitan Area) FLSA Classification Exempt Job Description Orbital is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer to support the execution of an Asset Integrity and Asset Management program at a client facility in Granite City, IL. This is a field-based engineering position embedded at the client's site, focused on mechanical equipment evaluation, repair engineering, and long-term asset management planning. In this role, you will serve as Orbital's on-site mechanical engineering resource — working with a high degree of independence while receiving technical oversight and managerial support from Orbital's office-based project team. You will be responsible for translating inspection findings into sound engineering solutions and supporting the client in making informed, risk-based decisions about their mechanical assets. This position is well suited for an engineer who is equally comfortable at a desk reviewing calculations and specifications and at a facility reviewing equipment conditions firsthand — someone who takes ownership of the engineering work and sees it through from assessment to solution. Essential Functions Mechanical Engineering & Assessment Serve as the primary engineering resource for mechanical asset evaluations, applying engineering judgment to assess condition, identify deficiencies, and prioritize corrective actions. Review and interpret mechanical inspection findings generated by the program's inspection team, translating field data into engineering evaluations and recommendations. Support inspection and repair planning for process equipment and mechanical systems, providing the engineering input necessary to ensure inspection activities are targeted, effective, and actionable. Perform site visits to equipment and systems as needed to verify conditions, gather supplemental information, and inform engineering decisions — not as an inspector, but as the engineer responsible for the solution. Prepare engineering reports, condition assessments, and technical recommendations for review by the client and Orbital's project team. Repair Engineering & Design Develop repair packages and maintenance recommendations based on engineering evaluations, condition assessments, and client priorities. Prepare calculations, designs, and repair specifications in support of identified repair and improvement projects. Coordinate with Orbital's office engineering team to ensure repair solutions are technically sound, code-compliant, and aligned with client requirements and applicable standards (ASME, API, NBIC, etc.). Provide engineering support during repair execution as needed — answering RFIs, reviewing submittals, and resolving field conditions — while construction and repair management remains the responsibility of others. Asset Management & Planning Support long-term asset management planning by contributing engineering expertise to condition assessments, maintenance strategies, and capital planning initiatives. Support outage and capital projects by providing mechanical engineering input during planning, scoping, and execution phases. Maintain accurate records of engineering evaluations, calculations, and repair histories to support Asset Management databases and long-term tracking. Identify recurring deficiency patterns and develop proactive engineering recommendations to support the client's long-term asset reliability goals. Contribute to the continued growth and improvement of Orbital's Asset Management and Repair Services capabilities. Safety, Quality & Compliance Comply with all Orbital, client, OSHA, MSHA, and site-specific safety requirements. Complete all work in accordance with applicable codes, standards, and Orbital's Quality Management System (QMS). Participate in pre-job planning, job hazard analyses (JHAs), and safety meetings as required. Promote consistency, repeatability, and continuous improvement in engineering execution and documentation quality. Team & Client Coordination Serve as the primary on-site mechanical engineering point of contact for the client's operations, maintenance, and engineering teams. Maintain strong working relationships with client personnel and Orbital's field- and office-based project leadership. Communicate engineering findings, recommendations, and project status clearly to both engineering and non-engineering audiences. Support proposal development, estimating, and scope definition as needed. Other Duties Please note that this job posting does not list all duties and responsibilities required of this position. Duties and responsibilities may change at any time with or without notice. Qualifications Minimum Requirements Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited college or university. Minimum five (5) years of professional mechanical engineering experience in industrial environments. Experience with pressure vessels, piping systems, rotating equipment, heat exchangers, and/or other mechanical plant equipment. Experience in asset-intensive industries such as power generation, oil and gas, refining, chemical processing, manufacturing, steel, mining, or materials processing. Demonstrated ability to independently develop engineering evaluations, repair packages, and capital recommendations from inspection and condition assessment data. Experience supporting outage planning, capital projects, or turnaround activities in an engineering capacity. Ability to work independently in a field-based role while maintaining effective communication with an office-based support team. Ability to access structures at elevated heights, in confined spaces, and in active industrial environments as needed to support engineering evaluations. Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to prepare clear calculations, technical reports, and recommendations for varied audiences. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and engineering software relevant to mechanical design and analysis. Preferred Qualifications Professional Engineer (PE) license, or ability and intent to obtain licensure. Experience supporting Asset Management, Asset Integrity, Mechanical Integrity (MI), or Risk-Based Inspection (RBI) programs. Familiarity with applicable codes and standards including ASME B31.1, B31.3, Section VIII, API 510, API 570, API 579, and/or NBIC. Familiarity with digital inspection platforms and asset management systems. Experience providing engineering support during repair and construction execution.
