About the role

The Electrical Shift Engineer is a key position within the Estates team at St James’s University Hospital. The successful candidate will work as part of a shift team on a four-on, four-off rotation consisting of two days followed by two nights. The role includes performing statutory planned maintenance to ensure maximum equipment availability and minimize downtime. Responsibilities

• Communicate effectively with Wards and Departments regarding Estates issues using written and verbal methods to maintain service delivery standards and keep service users informed.
• Ensure job descriptions are updated to comply with ISO9001:2000, HTM’s, working practices, and Permit to Work Systems.
• Interpret and work from instructions, drawings, and specifications for electrical or mechanical installations, plant, and equipment, adapting to new situations and sharing knowledge with others.
• Provide written job descriptions for new Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) items using manufacturers' instructions and best practice guidance.
• Apply thorough knowledge of work procedures and practices, supported by theoretical knowledge or relevant practical experience.
• Manufacture, design, assemble, erect, and install new work, often using independent judgment for complex equipment requiring precision.
• Problem-solve technical issues and diagnose faults on complex Mechanical and Electrical systems.
• Observe statutory and relevant requirements, particularly Health & Safety and Codes of Practice applicable to Operational Services.
• Learn new techniques and undergo training as necessary.
• Contribute to developing policies, procedures, and practices in your work area.
• Carry out Planned Preventative Maintenance and day-to-day duties, including maintenance of plant, equipment, and installations such as boilers, water testing, fire alarm systems, batteries, and uninterruptible power supplies.
• Utilize the Works Management System for recording, updating, and auditing estates records, and compiling Plant Histories.
• Conduct surveys for future maintenance, alterations, or improvements, including preparing and compiling technical reports.
• Maintain and repair building sanitary and water distribution systems in line with HSE guidance.
• Act as the first point of call for Estates-related issues or emergencies, such as fires, floods, or equipment breakdowns, requiring strong communication skills and the ability to work under pressure.
• Focus on making safe first, then engineering solutions to support clinical colleagues in treating patients.
• Work with other trades, problem-solve, interpret work drawings, and adapt to new techniques.

Requirements

• Solid engineering knowledge base, with the ability to work autonomously and as part of a team.
• Good communication skills and the ability to work under pressure.
• Experience in problem-solving, interpreting work drawings, and learning new techniques.
• Commitment to working in accordance with HTM’s and other guidance documentation, including providing necessary supporting documentation and feedback.
• Ability to organize, prioritize, and work professionally in a challenging yet rewarding environment.
