Contract position lasting 12 months, 100% onsite in Huntsville, Alabama.
About the Role
Creates 3D models, details 2D manufacturing drawings, manages bills of materials (BOMs), and applies Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) to support aerospace, defense, and precision industrial systems.
Responsibilities
- Creates and modifies detailed drawings using CAD hardware and software from sketches, layouts, or notes provided by engineering.
- Contributes design modifications to facilitate manufacturing operation or quality of product.
- Checks drawing plots versus the project input for correctness and conformance to standards.
- Works with design engineers regarding model accuracy, design, drafting standards, and ECN/ECR documentation.
- Designs major segments of complex subsystems and creates 3D models of parts and assemblies using SolidWorks 2023 to develop subsystem layouts.
- Prepares production drawings based on these models.
- Applies knowledge of materials, finishes, welding, and other manufacturing processes to drawings.
- Works within concept through manufacture environment and integrates/packages electro-mechanical enclosures.
- Performs Form, Fit, and Function verification.
- Participates in design reviews and works closely with engineers and manufacturing personnel to ensure design aspects are understood.
- Serves as liaison with operations during fabrication of parts to resolve design issues and update drawings.
- Performs tolerance analysis on mating parts to ensure proper fit.
- Applies knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) to designs in accordance with MIL-STD, ASME, NAS, and DOD standards.
- Develops concept, design, and/or shop drawings from sketches and/or 3D models to meet ASME Y14 drafting standards, including layouts, plans, details, sections, or schematics.
- Technically directs work and checks drawings of lower-level drafters.
- Provides expertise in CAD software for specific problem-solving on projects.
- May be requested to work with AutoCAD or similar tools such as SMAP 3D and DraftSight in preparation of 2D drawings.
- Daily availability to include evenings and weekends when necessary to reach goals/deadlines.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree (B.S.) from a four-year college or university, or an Associate's Degree in a related field with a minimum of 5+ years of directly related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 5+ years of current experience with SolidWorks (required).
- Experience with SolidWorks PDM (preferred).
- Advanced skills in 3D solid modeling/drafting using SolidWorks software.
- Advanced skills in 2D drafting using AutoCAD, SMAP 3D, or DraftSight software.
- Advanced knowledge of conventional engineering drawing practices per ASME Y14 standards.
- Intermediate knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerance (GD&T) per ASME Y14.5.
- Intermediate knowledge of machining operations and shop practices.
- Familiarity with and working knowledge of PDM file manager software.
- Willingness to work overtime and availability for evenings/weekends as needed.
- Experience working in three or more of the following disciplines (preference for all):

- Mechanical – Piping
- Mechanical – Ventilation/HVAC
