Mechanical Designer

About the role

A global materials science company running one of the oldest continuously operating corporate research organizations in the United States. This role sits at the company's central research and development campus, a site of more than 2 million square feet covering early stage research through product development, with pilot plants on site for building prototypes and testing production scale manufacturing. Equipment designed here gets built, installed, and run in the same place. Located in Painted Post, NY. Work arrangement is 100% onsite with no travel required.

Responsibilities

• Turn sketches, concepts, engineering direction, and preliminary layouts into complete, manufacturable mechanical designs
• Build detailed 3D models, assemblies, manufacturing and fabrication drawings, and assembly documentation in SolidWorks
• Create and maintain BOMs, part specifications, and engineering documentation in SolidWorks PDM
• Select and specify purchased components, standard hardware, and commercial off the shelf equipment for project requirements
• Work with internal supply chain, procurement, and manufacturing teams to source and buy components and equipment
• Deal directly with outside suppliers and fabrication vendors to identify, specify, quote, and procure parts, assemblies, and built equipment
• Apply tolerance schemes, fit selection, constraint methods, manufacturability, and maintainability across every design
• Build, fit, debug, and troubleshoot prototypes, then refine the design from what the bench tells you
• Verify design intent through fit up, inspection, and testing, and take part in design reviews with engineers, technicians, and suppliers
• Support installation, startup, and commissioning, and hold revision control and drawing standards through the project lifecycle

Requirements

• 5 or more years of hands on mechanical design experience
• High school diploma is the only education requirement and a degree is not required
• Demonstrated work creating complete mechanical designs, manufacturing drawings, and assembly documentation for custom equipment, tooling, fixtures, machinery, or automation systems
• Proficiency in SolidWorks for part modeling, assembly modeling, drafting, and detailing
• Experience with SolidWorks PDM or a similar
