Mechanical Design Engineer, Robotics
At Meta, we're building the future of human connection and the technology that enables it. This means continuously inventing and developing technologies for the next generation of experiences. As we move closer to a future with intelligent robots and advanced AI models, we're hiring talent across robotics hardware, system software, machine perception, and artificial intelligence. These groundbreaking projects offer a rare opportunity to help create new ways people connect globally.
About the role
The Meta Robotics Hardware team is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to tackle novel mechanical design challenges. This role involves designing and developing complex robotics that balance ergonomics, performance, reliability, and usability while adhering to rigorous safety and quality standards. You will contribute to initial concept development, analytical modeling, prototype design, construction, and testing in a high-ambiguity, deadline-focused environment where full system requirements are seldom known.
Responsibilities
- Design and analyze mechanical systems for prototype robotics, including structures, mechanisms, power transmissions, and systems integration, while balancing ergonomics, performance, reliability, weight, and maintainability.
- Support prototype fabrication and builds by collaborating with internal and external partners on part fabrication, robot assembly, fixture and tooling design, and assembly procedures.
- Develop subsystem test fixtures, design and execute tests, create test plans, measure and analyze data, and refine design assumptions based on findings.
- Work closely with cross-functional teams (electrical, software, firmware engineers) to deliver complete technical solutions.
- Troubleshoot mechanical failures, implement design improvements, and validate changes through testing.
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience in Mechanical Design Engineering, with a focus on Machine Design.
- BS degree or equivalent experience in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- Experience designing complex electromechanical assemblies (e.g., robotics, automotive, aerospace, industrial automation).
- Proficiency with SOLIDWORKS, Siemens NX, or similar CAD tools.
- Hands-on experience with prototyping manufacturing processes and materials.
- Proven ability to manage time-sensitive projects through completion while balancing evolving priorities and stakeholders.
- Experience with tolerance analysis and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
- Experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA).
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience leading projects from concept to completion.
- Ongoing AI skill development (e.g., prompt/context engineering, agent orchestration) and familiarity with emerging AI technologies.
- Ability to integrate AI tools to optimize workflows and drive measurable impact (e.g., efficiency gains, quality improvements).
- Experience in robotics and consumer electronic product design.
- Commitment to responsible and ethical AI practices (e.g., risk assessment, bias mitigation, quality reviews).
