About the role
North Wind Services (NWS) is seeking Mechanical Design Engineers to support the National Ignition Facility and Photon Science (NIF&PS) Directorate at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) in Livermore, CA. The position requires a strong background in mechanical engineering and the ability to work on complex projects from conception to completion.
Responsibilities
- Develop, concept, and complete detailed designs of hardware for laser, optics, mechanical, and diagnostic applications.
- Apply advanced knowledge of 3D CAD modeling using PTC Creo Parametric.
- Create assembly and detailed fabrication specification drawings and documentation for all designs.
- Analyze interference and tolerance stack-ups to validate form, fit, function, and cost optimization of each design.
- Perform basic stress/strain analyses to substantiate sizing and material decisions of all components.
- Contribute to the development of processes and procedures for the installation and commissioning of the hardware.
- Interact with vendors to ensure the successful implementation of designs.
- Integrate hardware into complex systems as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Requirements
- A bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field.
- At least 5 years of relevant experience in mechanical design and engineering.
- Working knowledge of developing design concepts across mechanical, optical, and electrical disciplines.
- Experience in fabricating and prototyping projects from conception to completion.
- Ability to produce and analyze tolerance stack-ups and create fabrication and assembly drawings.
- Experience working in a project team environment with engineers, scientists, designers, technicians, and coordinators.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills to present concepts and ideas to peers and managers.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Qualifications
- Pass a pre-employment medical exam and drug test.
- Meet eligibility requirements for a DOE Q-level clearance.
- Be able to pass various on-site training modules.
- Present a demonstration of essential duties and skills during the interview.
Skills
- Advanced knowledge of PTC Creo Parametric and Creo Simulate.
- Experience with PTC Windchill PDM system for creating ECRs and ECNs.
- Ability to review and verify the accuracy of work performed by peers and other engineering disciplines.
- Experience in performing structural and thermal analyses.
