Mechanical Design Engineer, Data Center Design Engineering

About the role

AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. We support all AWS data centers and the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. You’ll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles to help deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost.

As a mechanical engineer at Amazon, you’ll design resilient, cost-effective mechanical distribution systems, justify and communicate technical decisions to senior management, and drive continuous advancements in our designs. You’ll have the ability to define and design systems our customers rely on, working in a fast-paced, challenging, and collaborative environment.

Responsibilities

• Work with internal teams to understand user requirements.
• Design data center mechanical systems and collaborate with other disciplines to create construction document sets.
• Create designs that meet quality and budgetary requirements.
• Specify appropriate mechanical equipment by working with regional vendors and manufacturers.
• Define site utility requirements by collaborating with local utilities.
• Ensure compliance with city, county, and building code requirements by working with local agencies having jurisdiction.
• Review and approve equipment submittals.
• Define project scopes and provide technical support during construction phases.
• Work with commissioning teams to validate installation, operation, and performance of mechanical systems.
• Manage concurrent projects in multiple geographical regions.
• Travel to sites for reviews, evaluations, audits, and startup as needed (up to 20% travel, including occasional international support).
• Offer creative, out-of-the-box solutions to engineering challenges.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree or above in Mechanical Engineering.
• 6+ years of experience in design engineering or the construction industry, related to mechanical systems, including hydronics, air-side duct design, and plumbing design.
• 4+ years’ experience using Revit for producing Mechanical & Plumbing engineering BIM models and construction drawings.
• Experience applying local codes, International Code Council (ICC) requirements, and other mechanical industry standards.
• US Citizenship required.

Preferred Qualifications

• Professional Engineer License.
• Experience with design review processes, specification development, design standards, and submittal review.
• Ability to read and understand construction documents for all trades (design drawings, control diagrams, specifications, etc.).
• Experience designing high-volume air handling systems, chilled water systems, economization solutions, and direct/indirect evaporative cooling systems.
• Experience with performance-based alternatives to prescriptive mechanical design.
• Advanced knowledge of mechanical engineering systems.
• Experience directly related to the design or construction of data centers, critical infrastructure, or large-scale mechanical and electrical plants.
• Understanding of international mechanical design requirements (helpful but not required).

Pay

Base salary range: $116,800 – $160,000 USD annually (varies by location: Columbus, OH; Herndon, VA; Seattle, WA). Final compensation includes sign-on payments, restricted stock units (RSUs), and is determined by experience, qualifications, and location.
