Responsibilities

  • Check mechanical drawing and design packages for proper content, clarity, and completeness, ensuring compliance with applicable industry and military standards.
  • Review designs for fit, function, manufacturability, and economy of fabrication, including detailed evaluation of tolerance analysis, hardware selection, and fitment on assembly prints.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in GD&T, resolving interpretation issues on drawings and providing guidance to engineers and designers.
  • Verify and validate 3D models submitted to manufacturing using Siemens NX managed with Teamcenter, ensuring models and associated data accurately represent design intent.
  • Create and revise parametric drawings in conformance with established 3D modeling and drawing standards, including the integration of PMI (Product Manufacturing Information).
  • Review mechanical drawings with appropriate personnel, verifying completed work, dimensions, materials, and quantities to be used.
  • Collaborate closely with various engineering disciplines, Manufacturing, Quality, and other stakeholders to resolve design issues and ensure smooth transition to production.
  • Interface with external vendors as needed to clarify design requirements, resolve technical questions, and support manufacturability.
  • Perform related duties as assigned or required to support program objectives, schedule commitments, and budget constraints.

Essential Skills

  • 15–20 years of mechanical design experience in defense, aerospace, or closely related industries, with possible experience in automotive.
  • At least 3 years of experience specifically as a Design Checker in DOD, aerospace, or automotive environments.
  • Expert-level proficiency in Siemens NX and Teamcenter, with an indicated proficiency level of 8/10 or higher.
  • Daily, hands-on use of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) with expert-level capability, including the ability to make corrections and act as a subject matter expert.
  • Thorough knowledge of GD&T per ASME Y14.5, with demonstrated recent experience applying these standards.
  • Strong mechanical design and CAD background, including experience with Unigraphics NX 9.0 or later.
  • Experience in DOD, military, or aerospace design environments, including work on complex mechanical and energetics systems.
  • Experience using Siemens NX in a Teamcenter-managed environment for both 3D modeling and drawing creation.
  • Experience in DOD, military, or aerospace design environments, including work on complex mechanical and energetics systems.
  • Experience working on long-term development programs in aerospace or defense, such as interceptor or strategic deterrent systems.
  • Familiarity with aerospace or automotive manufacturing processes, including considerations for fit, function, and cost-effective fabrication.
  • Ability to work effectively with PMI (Product Manufacturing Information) in a paperless program environment, consolidating written assembly/work instructions, dimensions, and data sheets into the digital drawing set.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to clearly explain design issues and corrections.
  • Ability to work quickly and accurately under schedule pressure while maintaining a high level of quality and demonstrating patience and professionalism.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills, with a track record of meeting deadlines and supporting on-time release of drawings and models.
  • Comfort with standard office software including Word, Excel, and Windows operating systems.
  • U.S. citizenship with the ability to obtain a Secret security clearance.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Advanced GD&T certifications and training are highly desirable.
  • Experience checking and marking up drawings quickly and accurately, with the ability to communicate corrections diplomatically to designers and engineers.
  • Background in mechanical design for military or government programs, including defensive systems and launch systems.
  • Experience working on long-term development programs in aerospace or defense, such as interceptor or strategic deterrent systems.
  • Familiarity with aerospace or automotive manufacturing processes, including considerations for fit, function, and cost-effective fabrication.
  • Ability to act as a liaison between engineering, manufacturing, quality, and vendors to resolve design and production issues.
  • Experience working in environments where performance metrics include on-time delivery of drawing releases and maintaining program schedules and budgets.
  • Comfort operating in a contract-to-hire arrangement aligned with a senior-level Engineering Design role.
