About the Role

Professionally maintain all heavy-duty and light-duty equipment and vehicles associated with the construction and maintenance of secondary roads, rural airports, and other user agency vehicles. Resolve unusual or complex equipment problems using a variety of techniques and methods. Perform routine and specialized repair and maintenance on heavy equipment, including diagnosing, maintaining, repairing, and modifying the following systems:

  • Transmissions and drive trains
  • Suspension systems
  • Engines and emission systems
  • Fuel injection systems
  • Hydraulic systems
  • Brake systems (air and electrical) for light and heavy-duty equipment

As part of the State Equipment Fleet (SEF) team, you will directly impact the department’s mission of “Keeping Alaskans Moving through Service and Infrastructure.” SEF provides all state agencies with safe, economical vehicles to accomplish their missions. Your work will help keep essential vehicles and equipment operational on roads and runways, ensuring safe transportation across Alaska.

Work Environment

Work location: MP .1 Alaska Peninsula Highway, King Salmon, AK. Travel to remote locations via small planes may be required, including day trips and overnight stays.

Requirements

  • Any combination of education and/or experience demonstrating the following competencies:
    • Mechanical: Knowledge of machines and tools, including design, use, repair, and maintenance.
    • Flexibility: Openness to change, adaptability to new information, and ability to handle unexpected obstacles.
    • Vehicle Maintenance: Knowledge of motor vehicle engines, parts, and systems, including design, repair, and maintenance.
    • Self-Management: Ability to set realistic goals, work with minimal supervision, and demonstrate initiative and responsibility.
  • Steel-toed boots or approved personal protective equipment required to prevent injuries.
  • Completion of the following training (provided after hire if not already obtained):
    • 40-hour Emergency Trauma Treatment (ETT) course
    • ARFF (Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting) training, including a 40-hour course, medical evaluation, and fit test for self-contained breathing apparatus
    • Managing Wildlife Hazards at Airports training
  • Proficiency in operating heavy equipment.
  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) required:
    • Must possess a Class A CDL or obtain one within 120 days of hire (hire is conditional on this requirement).
    • Must register with the federal CDL Drug & Alcohol Testing Clearinghouse and consent to employer review of driver information per 49 CFR 382.
    • Cannot start work until passing a pre-employment drug test.
  • Must provide own hand tools; a bi-weekly tool allowance is provided as per LTC contract.
  • This position requires the use of firearms or ammunition. Candidates convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence are ineligible per federal law (PL-104-208).
