About the role

This position involves performing maintenance and repairs on various types of equipment, including engines, transmissions, and electrical systems. It also includes welding and fabrication tasks, tire and blade changes, and other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Performs maintenance and repairs on equipment from minor service to major engine repair using precision instruments, welding equipment, shop machines, and power tools.
  • Performs complete diagnosis of any mechanical, electrical, or other breakdown or failure to motorized equipment.
  • Changes tires and other equipment as needed.
  • Performs welding and fabrication of materials to make necessary repairs.
  • Disassembles, overhauls, repairs, and reassembles engines, transmissions, differentials, clutches, brakes, electrical systems, fuel systems to motorized equipment or related equipment.
  • Submits parts order requests through the Purchasing Department.
  • Charges out parts and materials from the stock room to maintain accurate inventory records.
  • Adheres to departmental standards regarding HIPAA and other privacy issues.
  • May assist in the training of other employees, especially in safety and heavy equipment repair.
  • Maintains proficiency in computer software programs for diagnosing modern heavy equipment technologies.
  • Assists in the fabrication of plow trucks and other equipment, under direction from the fleet manager or a Class 8 employee.
  • Has a complete understanding of hydraulic systems, including hydraulic flow rates and pressures.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent education.
  • A minimum of four (4) years of experience in the truck mechanic trade.
  • Minimum three (3) years of ICRD Class 7 experience, plus attainment of at least four (4) of the six (6) current State of Michigan Heavy Duty Truck Mechanic Certifications.
  • Two (2) years of college from a trade school, military training, or equivalent educational experience focused on heavy equipment repair.
  • Five (5) years or more continuously employed as an ICRD Class 7 and the ability to perform all the required tasks of a Class 7.
  • The ability to mentor less experienced Class 7's in fabrication of new fleet equipment.
  • Valid Commercial Driver License A, with Group N endorsement.
  • Ability to read blueprints and draft basic blueprints for designing and assembling of new equipment.
  • Advanced ability in fabrication of plow trucks and other equipment, under general direction from the Fleet Manager, with little or no guidance.
  • Ability to mentor less experienced Class 7’s in fabrication of new fleet equipment.

Qualifications

  • Class 7: High school diploma or equivalent, 4 years of experience in truck mechanic trade.
  • Step 4 Class 7: 3 years ICRD Class 7 experience, 4 State of Michigan Heavy Duty Truck Mechanic Certifications.
  • Step 5 Class 7: 2-year degree, military training, or equivalent experience, 5 years or more continuous ICRD Class 7 experience, 4 State of Michigan Heavy Duty Truck Mechanic Certifications.
  • Class 8: 6 State of Michigan Heavy Duty Truck Mechanic Certifications, welding certifications from a recognized national organization, ability to read blueprints, advanced fabrication skills, ability to mentor less experienced Class 7's, and ability to provide confined space training.
