Mechanic – Public Works Streets/Service Center

About the role

Under the general supervision of the Public Works Director, the Mechanic performs skilled mechanical work related to the care and maintenance of heavy-duty streets and drainage equipment, public works vehicles, and public safety vehicles.

Responsibilities

• Perform maintenance on all heavy equipment and vehicles in the streets, drainage, and parks operation, including maintenance on public safety vehicles and large equipment such as forklifts, excavators, gradalls, and bobcats
• Maintain the mechanic work area and company tools in a safe, secure, clean, and organized manner
• Establish and execute a preventative maintenance program to ensure that heavy equipment and vehicles are in working condition and safe to utilize on a daily basis
• Maintain accurate receipts and advise the Director on expenses, capital equipment purchases, and replacement needs
• Perform other maintenance duties as assigned in the Public Works Department, including operating heavy and light machinery
• Report problems and emergency situations; recognize, avoid, and report unsafe acts to the immediate supervisor
• Respond to emergency maintenance requests during normal hours and after hours, and be available for emergency call-out
• Represent the City in a professional manner with the public, vendors, and agencies; handle difficult complaints and inquiries
• Work closely with other members of the Public Works department and other City teams to provide a coordinated and supportive approach to service delivery
• Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or GED

Licenses/Certifications: Texas Driver's License (Class B or higher), safe driving record, and ability to be insured; A.S.E. Certification in heavy equipment and diesel engines

Experience: Minimum of 2 years of mechanic experience in streets, parks, grounds, or other heavy equipment maintenance operations

Preferred: Specific mechanical certifications helpful (e.g., hydraulics, specific engine types or brands, brakes, transmissions); safety training certifications preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Complete heavy equipment maintenance work orders safely, efficiently, and effectively
• Follow directions of Supervisor(s) and follow safe work practices
• Analyze and solve problems, evaluate alternatives, and make creative recommendations
• Read and interpret plans, specifications, and guidelines
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
• Represent the City professionally
• Maintain accurate records and prepare clear and concise reports and correspondence as needed
• Experience with and knowledge of maintenance of heavy equipment and machinery required for Public Works department work, including streets, drainage, parks, and public safety vehicles (forklifts, loaders, bobcats, excavators)
• Proficiency with tools, equipment, motors, complex engines, and City vehicles
• Knowledge of principles, practices, methods, and materials for municipal maintenance projects and activities
• Knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques related to streets and drainage equipment maintenance
• Knowledge of safety practices pertaining to the lines of work
• Knowledge of applicable state and federal laws and regulations

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

• Work is performed outdoors and/or in a garage environment frequently
• Working in inclement weather may be necessary
• Working hours may fluctuate to meet the needs of the City
• All City employees may be required to report for duty during emergencies to ensure continuity of City services
• Regularly required to communicate with co-workers and citizens
• Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, squat, bend, use hand and finger dexterity, and use physical strength to lift, reach, push, pull, and apply pressure
• Requires ability to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl
• May be required to lift or move up to 50 pounds
• Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
• Must maintain professional, respectful communications with the general public, co-workers, and supervisors
• Must be able to multi-task, prioritize, problem-solve, and work under time-constraints
• Must be able to maintain confidentiality and resolve conflicts
• May require independent judgment and sound decision-making related to maintenance needs in the absence of supervisory direction
• Must show and maintain a high level of initiative, enthusiasm, and motivation
• Must be available for work, report in a dependable and timely fashion, and be physically and mentally fit to perform assigned work

7:30 AM – 4:30 PM, Monday–Friday (non-standard hours may be required)
