This posting includes two positions: Mechanic I and Mechanic II. Both roles involve maintenance and repair of the City's vehicles, heavy equipment, rolling stock, and small equipment.
Responsibilities
- Perform mechanical work on heavy and light equipment, including gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, brake, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
- Conduct routine lubrication, tire repair, welding, carpentry, plumbing, and electrical maintenance on equipment.
- Assist in maintenance record keeping.
- Perform manual labor related to construction, operation, or maintenance of public utilities and property.
- Build special equipment as directed.
- Purchase parts for required repairs.
- Operate heavy equipment and trucks as needed for street, sewer, and water system maintenance.
- Mechanic II only: Perform mechanical work for fire, medical, and rescue vehicles and their on-board equipment.
- Mechanic II only: Direct work of others assigned to assist with equipment maintenance and repair.
- Mechanic II only: Initiate purchase orders, purchase/receive, and review invoices for parts and supplies.
- Mechanic II only: Participate in training and coaching junior mechanics and other assigned personnel.
- Perform other duties as directed.
Requirements
Mechanic I
- Three years of experience in heavy mechanical work.
- Working knowledge of repair of light and heavy engines, transmissions, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
- Welding experience desired.
- Ability to keep accurate records.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Commercial Driver's License (CDL) preferred but not required.
Mechanic II
- Five years of experience in mechanical work on heavy and light-duty equipment with diesel and gasoline engines.
- Extensive knowledge in repair of light and heavy engines, transmissions, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
- Extensive knowledge in welding and metal fabrication (steel and aluminum) for building, rebuilding, or repair of equipment.
- Extensive knowledge of diagnostic computers for troubleshooting operational problems.
- Working knowledge of using a metal lathe and other typical tools of the trade.
- Experience with computerized record keeping and Microsoft Office suite.
- Technical education/training applicable to the position, equivalent to a two-year degree.
- Preferred qualifications:
- Technical education/training equivalent to a two-year degree after high school diploma or GED.
- Working knowledge of equipment used in the construction and maintenance of heavy civil infrastructure.
- Experience with high-pressure steam boiler units.
- Advanced training in skills or best practices applicable to the mechanic trade.
- Working knowledge of fire, medical, and rescue vehicles and their on-board equipment.
- Experience fabricating customized equipment for specialized applications.
- Experience with municipal public works operations.
- Commercial Driver's License (CDL) preferred but not required.
Decision-Making Responsibilities
- Assist with preventive maintenance and determine costs of repair versus replacement of equipment systems.
- Develop procedures at the unit level.
- Moderate budget authority at the unit level.
- Activities may pose a major source of potential liability to the City.
Supervisory Authority
- Mechanic I: None.
- Mechanic II: May be temporarily assigned as Lead Mechanic or to direct and organize the work of others for special projects.
External Visibility/Contact
- High frequency of contact with key service personnel for purchasing parts, supplies, or services, and working with third-party contractors.
- Low frequency of contact with government officials, the general public, and key City personnel.
- Infrequent attendance or presentation at public meetings.
Working Conditions
- Shop environment with high frequency exposure to hazardous working situations.
- Moderate exposure to adverse weather conditions when working on maintenance of heavy equipment.
- Frequent heavy physical exertion, including lifting or moving equipment and working in awkward positions using tools.
- May be required to work holidays, irregular hours, and be on call.
- Subject to the Commercial Driver's License Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy if the employee has a CDL.
