Position Summary

Troubleshoots, repairs, and conducts preventative maintenance on Port Houston equipment and supporting equipment.

Key Responsibilities/Duties

  • Inspect, repair, and maintain mechanical equipment or machinery including but not limited to container handling units, yard tractors, forklifts, vehicles and terminal chassis.
  • Diagnose and repair component parts of machinery including gearboxes, hydraulic systems, brakes, compressors and other related parts; diagnose and repair chassis components and systems, brakes, pneumatic, suspension, and alignment.
  • Utilize computer or diagnostic tools to enter and retrieve information.
  • Provide cost estimates for repairs to equipment and machinery including engine overhaul, body repair and work order requests.
  • Use hand tools, hoists, pressure gauges, drills, grinding wheels, and other tools proficiently to carry out assigned tasks.
  • For yard truck and chassis repair, remove, repair and replace transmissions, engines, brakes, suspensions, exhaust, fuel, cooling and electrical systems.
  • Read and use factory manuals and blueprints as required to fulfill job assignments.
  • Cook up and delegate work duties to subordinate staff.
  • Work required scheduled overtime hours and be available for unscheduled overtime when operating requirements or other business needs of Port Houston cannot be fulfilled during regular working hours.
  • Work a temporary, alternative schedule or shift as requested by supervisor.

  • Perform other duties as required.

Education/Experience

  • A High School diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • 4+ years related mechanic experience required.

  • Knowledge diagnostics and repair.
  • Knowledge of mechanics.
  • Knowledge of automotive and heavy-duty equipment repair and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of safety policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of safety precautions concerning occupational hazards.
  • Ability to work with others.
  • Ability to pay attention to detail.
  • Ability to operate a forklift.
  • A current, valid Texas driver's license is required.
  • A Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) must be obtained within 30 days of appointment, and be maintained for the duration of employment.

Work Environment

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but due to open office environment noise level may occasionally be high.
