About the Role
The Mechanic performs skilled and semi-skilled maintenance, service, and repair of District school buses (diesel, gasoline, and CNG), vehicles, and other equipment.
Schedule
- 8 hours per day, 244 days per year
- Shift: 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Pay
- Pay Range: Step 1: $4,708 – Step 8: $6,109 monthly
- Initial salary placement from Step 1 to Step 3 depending on amount of reasonably related experience

Requirements
- Valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License with passenger endorsement
- Ability to obtain and maintain insurability status under the District's vehicle insurance policy
- Minimum one (1) year prior related experience involving both gas and diesel engines
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance
- Negative drug screen test
- Negative TB test results
- May require California State Certification in assigned inspection area(s), such as smog, brake, lamp, etc.
- Evidence of Insurability – DMV Driver's Record Search dated no earlier than six (6) months before the posting recruitment period (online printout acceptable; must include the word "end" on the final page)
- For CSEA current employees seeking voluntary lateral transfer: letter of recommendation from current supervisor dated within six months of vacancy posting
Skills & Abilities
- Maintain gas, alternative fuel, and diesel engines
- Operate hand and power tools
- Knowledge of repairs, safe working methods and procedures
- Stand for prolonged periods; inspect and repair buses
- Lift, carry, push, pull; stoop, crouch, reach, handle
- Hear conversations and other sounds (e.g., air leaks)
- Near/far visual acuity, depth perception, accommodation
- Diagnose, determine appropriate parts and repairs, and repair vehicle and mechanical malfunctions
- Communicate effectively in oral and written forms
