MECHANIC

About the Role

A Mechanic provides a wide range of technical services on company buses, vans, and automobiles. This is a journeyman position that requires significant technical training and/or experience, working under the general direction of the Shop Supervisor and the Operations Manager.

Responsibilities

• Performs thorough and accurate Preventative Maintenance (PM) inspections.
• Completes all required PM maintenance operations including lubrication, fluid changes, brake adjustments, and tire rotation following schedules.
• Performs unscheduled maintenance as needed with direction from the Supervisor.
• Performs complex operations including engine, electrical, fuel, brake, and exhaust repairs and field tests, requiring interpretation of drawings, specifications, and other technical materials.
• Utilizes a ladder and other elevation equipment to access the roof of buses and elevated light fixtures for repairs and maintenance.
• Operates CDL and Non-CDL vehicles (buses and vans) to perform road tests and shuttle vehicles in and out of the garage for repairs and maintenance.
• Performs DVIR repairs daily based on fleet needs and work orders submitted by drivers.
• Assists with starting buses for AM/PM routes, including jumping off buses that won’t start and adding ether to the system.
• Stands for long periods while performing medium and heavy-duty motor work (e.g., turbo replacement).
• Maintains shop cleanliness by sweeping floors, wiping down equipment, tools, parts, workstations, mopping spills, and emptying oil reservoirs into the main tank.
• Coordinates with vendors to empty the main oil tank.
• Conducts monthly inventory, orders parts using the computer system, and restocks them in the tool crib.
• Performs emergency roadside services as needed, including operating replacement vehicles or utility trucks.
• Documents repairs and parts on work orders completely and accurately.
• Maintains tools and workplaces to ensure safe, neat, and orderly conditions.
• Adheres to all safety provisions associated with vehicle maintenance, including OSHA standards and State EPA regulations regarding disposal of toxic waste substances.
• Performs other duties as required.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent, supplemented by specialized vehicle and equipment repair courses.
• For Tech A: At least five (5) to seven (7) years of hands-on experience working on diesel engines with large buses or vehicles in an automotive, school bus, trucking, or heavy equipment environment.
• For Tech B: At least four (4) years of experience as a mechanic in an automotive, school bus, trucking, or heavy equipment environment.
• For Tech C: At least two (2) years of experience as a mechanic in an automotive, school bus, trucking, or heavy equipment environment.
• Class 7 Inspection license.
• Possession of a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and DOT physical, or ability to attain within 3 months of hire.
• Provide own hand tools required for regular maintenance.
• Ability to safely lift heavy equipment (minimum of 50 lbs, up to 100 pounds) frequently throughout the workday.
• Ability to successfully pass state and/or federal required background checks.
• This is a safety-sensitive job, and all duties are regulated by the DOT.

Skills

• Knowledge of tools, procedures, technical skills, and safety rules used in the maintenance and repair of gasoline, diesel, and alternative-powered equipment.
• Written and verbal communication skills, and customer service skills.
• Ability to diagnose problems and find solutions.
• Knowledge of Federal and State regulations.
• Operational knowledge of motorized gasoline, diesel, and alternative-fueled vehicles, as well as shop equipment and tools.
• Ability to schedule and set priorities for work.
• Inspection of equipment and diagnosis of mechanical defects.
• Propane/gasoline medium-duty truck engine experience preferred.
• ASE Certification(s) a plus.
• Ability to operate bench grinder, torch, drill press, jack and jack stands, Sawzall, oil pumps, power washer, parts cleaner, and other hand tools required to perform work.
• Regular and dependable attendance.
