Summary

Performs routine mechanical work on U.S. Navy shore facilities, waterborne vessels, surface ships and/or submarines. Tasks will be related to inspections, repairs, modernization and/or alterations.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Proficient in the use of precision measurement equipment including scales, vernier calipers.
  • Performs disconnects and connections of mechanical joints.
  • Removes and installs various equipment using sound engineering practices.
  • Performing duties as Firewatch.
  • Affords assistance in cleaning up work area.
  • Employees may be required to travel for work to other locations

  • Language Ability: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Computer Skills: Must possess basic computer skills to enter data into different data bases.
  • Education/Experience: Must have completed a formal related course of study in trade through either a community college, technical or trade school, military training, formal company training program or an apprentice program. Must have 1-5 years of verifiable experience as a mechanic in an industrial environment (i.e., shipbuilding, ship repair or nuclear power plants).
  • Certificates and Licenses: Must be able to successfully pass a criminal background check and obtain and maintain a security badge for all military installations and civilian shipyards as needed.

Knowledge, Skills and Other Abilities

  • Must be able to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, written technical instructions and manuals.
  • Must possess working knowledge of shipboard operating requirements and understand material safety data sheets (MDS).
  • Able to follow safety procedures.

Physical Demands

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required on a regular basis to stand, walk, sit, use hands, reach with hands and arms, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk and/or hear.
  • Frequently the employee is required to carry objects that might weigh up to 50 pounds.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is working on a ship.
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to work near moving mechanical parts or working in a confined space.

Wage Range

  • $20.00 - $45.00
