Our mission is to ensure the physical, operational and financial integrity of the regional flood risk management system in southeastern Louisiana as a defense against floods and storm surge from hurricanes. We accomplish this by working with local, regional, state and federal partners to plan, design, construct, operate and maintain projects that reduce the probability and risk of flooding for residents and businesses within our jurisdiction.

About the role

The Mechanic – 3 is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and overhauling heavy equipment and complex vehicle systems (e.g., engines, hydraulics, transmissions). The position involves using both computerized and manual diagnostic tools and applying extensive mechanical and electronic systems knowledge. The role also includes performing field repairs or equipment operation and conducting light equipment maintenance (e.g., small engine tools). Additional tasks include test-driving vehicles and handling sandbags when necessary.

This appointment can be filled as Probational, Promotional, Lateral Transfer, Detail to Special Duty or Job Appointment. The position does not participate in a Career Progression Group.

In emergencies during Mississippi River flooding and hurricane/tropical storm events, the incumbent will be on call and must report for duty if required, remaining until released by the Appointing Authority.

Responsibilities

  • Performs one or more of the following types of maintenance or repairs as a primary, regular, and recurring function:
    • Disassembles, diagnoses, overhauls, rebuilds, and/or repairs heavy equipment or complex systems such as engines, transmissions, pneumatic systems, hydraulic systems, gear reduction systems, electrical systems, suspension systems, brake systems, and exhaust emission control systems.
    • Performs diagnostic tests to locate malfunctions using extensive knowledge of vehicle systems, incorporating visual and audible inspection with computerized test equipment (e.g., electronic scanners, engine analyzers, dynamometers, exhaust analyzers, oscilloscopes) and non-computerized test equipment.
    • Applies knowledge of how complex electronic systems affect the operation of mechanical systems to determine the nature and extent of repair necessary.
    • Selects the best work procedures to accomplish repair.
  • Assists Mechanic Supervisor A and Mechanic 4 in providing instruction, guidance, and assistance to Mechanic 2.
  • Assigns portions of work to lower-level mechanics assisting in major repairs.
  • Assists in training lower-level mechanics in the field on diesel and hydraulic engine repair.
  • Repairs and maintains equipment powered by small internal combustion engines (e.g., lawnmowers, string trimmers, outboard motors), including grinding valves, setting tappets and push rods, installing new piston rings, and cleaning parts.
  • Fills and handles sandbags as required.
  • Test-drives heavy-duty vehicles for troubleshooting.

Requirements

  • Three years of experience or training as a mechanic.

Pay

The salary offered will be determined based on qualifications and experience.
