About the role

The Mechanic 2 performs intermediate to advanced diagnostics, repairs, and maintenance on trailers, diesel and gasoline-powered vehicles, and plant equipment. This role builds on the foundational skills of a Mechanic 1 and includes mentoring junior mechanics.

Responsibilities

• Interpret repair manuals to properly service equipment
• Diagnose and repair diesel and gas engines, electrical systems, transmissions, and hydraulic systems
• Troubleshoot and repair air brake systems, suspension components, and drivetrains
• Use diagnostics software and scan tools to identify and resolve issues
• Maintain accurate service records and complete work orders in fleet management systems
• Respond to roadside service calls for disabled vehicles
• Maintain shop cleanliness and organization
• Mentor and assist Mechanic 1 as needed
• Perform preventive maintenance and repairs on fleet vehicles and plant equipment (wheel loaders, skid steers, man lifts, scissor lifts, backhoes, lawn mowers, farm tractors)
• Review driver vehicle inspection reports and repair inspections as directed by Mechanic 3 or Fleet Manager
• Perform routine maintenance: oil changes, filter replacements, fluid checks
• Inspect and replace basic components such as belts, hoses, batteries, and lights
• Assist in diagnosing mechanical issues using basic diagnostic tools
• Document work performed and parts used in maintenance logs or fleet management systems
• Adhere to all company safety rules and regulations; attend scheduled safety meetings
• Participate in ongoing training and certification programs (travel as needed)
• Other duties as assigned

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED preferred
• Valid Driver’s license
• Brake Certification required
• 3+ years of experience in vehicle maintenance or related technical field or vocational training plus 1+ year of related work
• Personal basic tool set to perform preventive maintenance (location-based)
• Proficiency with diesel and gasoline engine operation and components
• Experience with OEM diagnostics tools and software
• Ability to interpret wiring diagrams, schematics, work orders, and technical manuals
• Experience with hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment
• Detail-oriented and highly organized
• Proficient with basic computer tasks and fleet software

Preferred Qualifications

• Class A CDL (required at some locations—confirm with location)
• ASE certifications in Diesel Engines, Brakes, and Electrical Systems
• Ability to lead teams
• Exceptional written and oral communication skills
• Self-starter; self-motivated

Working Conditions

• Constantly exposed to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environments (high noise, strong odors, heat, cold)
• Frequently exposed to biohazardous conditions, toxic or caustic chemicals, electrical hazards, and dangerous equipment

Physical Demands

• Frequently required to sit, walk, use hands to operate tools and office machinery, stoop/kneel/crouch, climb ladders, and communicate effectively
• Frequently lift and move up to 50 pounds
