About the role

The Mechanic 2 is responsible for intermediate to advanced diagnostics, repairs, and maintenance on trailers, diesel, and gasoline-powered vehicles and plant equipment. This role builds upon the foundational skills and duties of a Mechanic 1. Night shift: 5pm–5am.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret and understand repair manuals to properly repair equipment
  • Diagnose and repair diesel and gas engines, electrical systems, transmissions, and hydraulic systems
  • Troubleshoot and repair air brake systems, suspension components, and drivetrains
  • Use diagnostics software and scan tools to identify and resolve issues
  • Maintain accurate service records and complete work orders in fleet management systems
  • Respond to roadside service calls for disabled vehicles when required
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the shop and work areas
  • Mentor and assist Mechanic 1 as needed
  • Perform all preventive maintenance and repair work on fleet vehicles and plant equipment (wheel loaders, skid steers, man lifts, scissor lifts, backhoes, lawn mowers, and farm tractors)
  • Review driver vehicle inspection reports and repair inspections as directed by Mechanic 3 and/or the Fleet Manager
  • Perform routine maintenance such as oil changes, filter replacements, and fluid checks
  • Inspect and replace basic components like belts, hoses, batteries, and lights
  • Assist in diagnosing mechanical issues using basic diagnostic tools
  • Document work performed and parts used through maintenance logs or fleet management systems
  • Observe all company safety rules and regulations; attend regularly scheduled safety meetings
  • Participate in ongoing training and certification programs (travel as needed)
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred
  • Valid Driver’s license
  • Brake Certification required
  • 3+ years of experience in vehicle maintenance or related technical field OR vocational training plus 1+ year of related work experience
  • Personal basic tool set to perform preventive maintenance (based on location)
  • Proficiency with diesel and gasoline engine operation and components
  • Experience with OEM diagnostics tools and software
  • Ability to interpret wiring diagrams, schematics, work orders, and technical manuals
  • Experience with hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment
  • Detail-oriented and highly organized
  • Proficient with basic computer tasks and use of fleet software

Preferred Qualifications

  • Class A CDL (required at some locations—confirm with location)
  • ASE certifications in areas such as Diesel Engines, Brakes, and Electrical Systems
  • Ability to successfully lead teams
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills
  • Self-starter; self-motivated

Working Conditions

  • Constantly exposed to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environments such as high noise levels, strong odors, and/or exposure to heat and cold
  • Frequently exposed to biohazardous conditions
  • Frequently exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, requiring attention to safety considerations
  • Frequently exposed to electrical hazards; risk of electrical shock
  • Frequently handles or works with potentially dangerous equipment

Physical Demands

  • Frequently must remain in a stationary position (sit)
  • Frequently must move about inside/outside the office or work location (walk)
  • Frequently operates a computer and other office machinery (use hands to finger, handle, or feel)
  • Frequently must position oneself to maintain equipment, including under desks and in server closets (stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl)
  • Frequently must ascend/descend a ladder (climb or balance)
  • Frequently must use senses to effectively communicate and detect hazardous conditions (talk, hear, taste, smell)
  • Frequently lifts up to 50 pounds
