MECHANIC 1-3 (MECHANIC SHOP)

About the role

The overall function of this position is to maintain, repair, and overhaul all types of equipment including heavy mobile equipment or complex mechanical systems on mobile equipment. This position is located in District 03 of the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development and reports directly to the Mobile Equipment Shop Superintendent. The incumbent must be self-motivated, able to perform duties with minimal supervision, and interpret unforeseen conditions as they arise. The incumbent will participate in appropriate DOTD structured training programs and attend continuing education classes and conferences deemed necessary to facilitate required tasks.

Responsibilities

• Overhauls, rebuilds, and performs major repairs on heavy-duty diesel equipment.
• Performs major repairs on gasoline engines of all makes and models.
• Performs final tune-ups.
• Assists Shop Foreman and Shop Superintendent in providing guidance to lower-level mechanics on all units.
• Provides assistance and advice to lower-level mechanics in the field for repairing hydraulic systems and engines.
• Performs diagnostic tests on various systems to locate malfunctions in electrical systems.
• Troubleshoots and repairs transmissions in heavy-duty diesel equipment, including standard and automatic transmissions.
• Checks and repairs torque converters in heavy-duty diesel equipment.
• Checks electrical systems to determine the nature and extent of repairs.
• Removes and rebuilds drive lines on heavy-duty diesel, cars, and light trucks.
• May perform other duties as necessary, including emergency/disaster support activities.

Requirements

• One year of experience or training as a mechanic.

Pay

Starting hourly rates for each level:

• Mechanic-1: $17.18/hour
• Mechanic-2: $19.67/hour
• Mechanic-3: $21.05/hour

Appointment Type: Probational and Promotional. This position may be filled as a Mechanic 1, 2, or 3.
