About the Role

To assist customers in their shopping experience by receiving, cutting, and serving meat products in the most efficient, friendly, and courteous manner. This role ensures the provision of quality smoked meats daily and involves receiving, stocking, packaging, and displaying meat products in the Meat Department. The Meat Helper will also assist customers at the meat counter and with smoked products.

This is a non-exempt position that formally reports to the Meat Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Follow all guidelines on proper techniques for cutting and/or preparing items for placement in the display cases.
  • Smoke various meats to be sold in the store.
  • Monitor all product expiration dates and ensure proper rotation of items.
  • Identify and remove damaged, unsaleable, or returnable products, following proper procedures for damage claims.
  • Accurately count and record merchandise as part of the inventory process.
  • Quickly and accurately change shelf tags, price markers on displays, and label/price mark merchandise.
  • Be knowledgeable about department items, procedures, and policies to answer customer questions accurately and courteously.
  • Assist customers at the counter by weighing, wrapping, and pricing selected items.
  • Meet or exceed productivity standards to achieve desired team and individual results.
  • Resolve customer complaints professionally and escalate to management when necessary.
  • Implement the Casentino Customer Service Standards.
  • Unload and sort incoming shipments, stocking them in designated areas without damaging merchandise.
  • Neatly stock department shelves by matching item UPC codes to shelf tags and ensuring products are front-facing.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area and department for customers and coworkers.
  • Comply with all health regulations, sanitation guidelines, and safety procedures for the department and store.
  • Operate, clean, and maintain all equipment safely and competently.

Requirements

  • A food handling permit must be obtained within the first 14 days of employment.
  • Completion of ongoing training and development as listed on the Cosentino’s Learning Plan.
  • Demonstrate strong verbal and interpersonal skills for positive customer and peer interactions.
  • Basic math and reading skills required for the position.

A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred.

Skills

  • Reaching overhead with both arms up to a maximum of 72 inches, twisting at the waist, and lifting objects with both hands weighing up to 20 lbs.
  • Pushing and pulling grocery items/carts with a peak force of up to 40 lbs.
  • Standing and walking for long periods on hard surfaces (tile, asphalt, concrete).
  • Occasionally lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs.
  • Bending, squatting, and crouching, sometimes to floor level.
  • Able to work in colder conditions, such as grocery coolers and freezers.

Non-Essential Responsibilities

  • Promote new items and weekly specials through effective merchandising and creative displays.
  • Monitor the department for potential security issues and report concerns to management.
  • Support the company by completing additional tasks identified by management, assisting other stores or departments as needed, and gaining new skills.
  • Climbing a ladder, possibly up to 5 ft.
