About the role
The Meat Cutter ensures the store’s meat department operates at the standards set by the company, driving sales and maximizing profitability. The Meat Cutter delivers the highest level of customer service and satisfaction by following the company’s meat merchandising plan and trimming/preparing standard cuts of meat as outlined in the Meat Cutter Resource Manual. The role demonstrates excellent teamwork, interpersonal skills, and commitment to the success of the team.

Responsibilities
- Works under the direction of the Store Manager and Assistant Store Manager.
- Cuts and/or packages authorized beef, pork, and poultry items using knives and power equipment according to Save-A-Lot policies and procedures.
- Wraps, weighs, and prices cuts of meat; labels packages according to COOL, USDA, and Save-A-Lot standards.
- Updates displays and case signs; merchandises meat to maximize sales.
- May assist with product ordering.
- Maintains proper date rotation for dated and undated products per Save-A-Lot policy in both display cases and storage coolers.
- Prepares and places meat cuts and products in display counters to appear attractive and appealing to customers.
- Receives, inspects, and stores meat upon delivery to maintain cold chain and ensure meat quality.
- Ensures excellent sanitation and quality standards are met daily per Save-A-Lot policy.
- Follows and executes all Save-A-Lot policies and procedures, including COOL, Food Safety, Sanitation, Meat/Produce Scale operation, Mark Downs, Inventory Processes, Meat POGs, Meat Cutter Resource Manual, Daily Manager Signoff, and Meat Cutting List.
- Performs other perishable and non-perishable related duties to maintain optimal store performance.
- Protects company property, funds, and merchandise at all times.
- May be assigned to work in more than one store.
Requirements
- Must be 18 years of age.
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Successful completion of Save-A-Lot Meat Cutter Training Program within 3 months.
- Previous experience cutting meat, including using hand tools and power equipment (knives, slicers, grinders, cubing machine, power saw) preferred.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Must be dependable and flexible.
- Must adhere to uniform dress code.
Physical Requirements
- Most work is performed in a temperature-controlled environment (38-45 degrees).
- Ability to reach, bend, balance, lift, and transport objects weighing up to 30 lbs. repeatedly throughout the shift; occasionally, product weight may reach 100 lbs. (with assistance).
- Ability to move heavy product with assistance.
- Ability to stand, walk, and/or move about for extended periods.
- Ability to push, pull, grasp, and use sawing motions for extended periods.
