About the role

This position involves assisting in the medical records department, organizing and directing its operations, and providing support to other departments within the facility.

Responsibilities

  • Follow work schedule and instructions from supervisor and established policies.
  • Aid in organizing and directing the medical records department.
  • Assist the Medical Records/Health Information Consultant as needed.
  • Maintain meeting minutes.
  • File documents as necessary.
  • Maintain positive relationships with inter-departmental personnel.
  • Record incidents/accidents and file accordingly.
  • Retrieve and file resident records.
  • Transcribe and type physician reports.
  • Prepare and answer correspondence.
  • Retrieve medical records as requested.
  • Ensure incomplete records are corrected.
  • Develop and maintain procedures for resident records.
  • Ensure records are properly filed and accessed.
  • Abstract information for insurance companies, Medicare, Medicaid, VA, etc.
  • Index medical records as directed.
  • Manage various registries.
  • Report any unauthorized attempts to access facility’s information system.
  • Assume administrative authority, responsibility, and accountability for assigned duties.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum typing speed of 45 words per minute.
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and health information systems preferred.
  • On-the-job training in medical record and health information system procedures.
  • Knowledge of computers, data retrieval, and input/output functions.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Ability to apply mathematical concepts to practical situations.
  • Ability to make independent decisions and work harmoniously with others.
  • Physical ability to move, lift, and operate equipment as needed.
  • Ability to cope with mental and emotional stress.
  • General health requirements set forth by the facility.
