About the role
This position involves assisting in the medical records department, organizing and directing its operations, and providing support to other departments within the facility.
Responsibilities
- Follow work schedule and instructions from supervisor and established policies.
- Aid in organizing and directing the medical records department.
- Assist the Medical Records/Health Information Consultant as needed.
- Maintain meeting minutes.
- File documents as necessary.
- Maintain positive relationships with inter-departmental personnel.
- Record incidents/accidents and file accordingly.
- Retrieve and file resident records.
- Transcribe and type physician reports.
- Prepare and answer correspondence.
- Retrieve medical records as requested.
- Ensure incomplete records are corrected.
- Develop and maintain procedures for resident records.
- Ensure records are properly filed and accessed.
- Abstract information for insurance companies, Medicare, Medicaid, VA, etc.
- Index medical records as directed.
- Manage various registries.
- Report any unauthorized attempts to access facility’s information system.
- Assume administrative authority, responsibility, and accountability for assigned duties.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Minimum typing speed of 45 words per minute.
- Working knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and health information systems preferred.
- On-the-job training in medical record and health information system procedures.
- Knowledge of computers, data retrieval, and input/output functions.
- Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
- Ability to apply mathematical concepts to practical situations.
- Ability to make independent decisions and work harmoniously with others.
- Physical ability to move, lift, and operate equipment as needed.
- Ability to cope with mental and emotional stress.
- General health requirements set forth by the facility.
