About the role

The MDC Facility Technician, under general supervision and generally working alone, executes maintenance-related functions for MDC facilities. This role involves making repairs to buildings and equipment and performing general maintenance and construction duties across several crafts or trades at a level that does not require a state license.

Responsibilities

• Performs a wide variety of tasks requiring skills in building trades including carpentry, painting, electrical, plumbing, heating/cooling, and cleaning duties.
• Maintains a written work order log on all projects and submits progress reports on request.
• Reports observed violations or client inquiries requiring communication with department management.
• Performs basic groundskeeping duties and coordinates additional maintenance and grounds keeping as necessary.
• Maintains adequate inventory of equipment, supplies, and materials; initiates new material orders as needed.
• Checks on contracted work orders to ensure completion and acceptability for payment.
• Clears back-ups; repairs leaks; cleans stacks, vents, and drains; installs fixtures; and conducts both regular maintenance and emergency service on MDC facilities.
• Assists in inventory control, ordering repair parts for various systems, and ensures systems are protected and well-maintained.
• Assists with moving office furniture and equipment.
• Drives county vehicles to pick up equipment or supplies.
• Performs preventive maintenance at facilities or on equipment as needed.
• Performs other job-related duties as required or assigned.

Requirements

• High School diploma or GED.
• Any combination of post-secondary education and/or experience totaling seven (7) years in building maintenance or a related field.
• Knowledge of the safe operation and basic maintenance of a wide variety of hand tools and small power tools.
• Knowledge of basic construction practices.
• Must be able to read and write in English.
• Ability to instruct, schedule, and direct the work of others.
• Ability to maintain pleasant working relationships with superiors, subordinates, co-workers, and other County employees.
• Ability to read blueprints and follow light construction specifications.
• Successful completion of a post-offer employment medical examination and background investigation.
• Adherence to all County safety guidelines.
• Completion of all FEMA training(s) assigned to this position.
• Possession of a valid New Mexico driver’s license by the date of hire and maintenance of a valid license while employed in this position.
• Complete required supervisor training, if applicable.

Working Conditions

• Duties are performed both indoors and outdoors. Indoor duties are in a temperature-controlled environment, while outdoor duties expose workers to natural weather conditions, which may be severe.
• Indoor surfaces may include carpet, tile, or concrete, typically dry. Outdoor surfaces may include concrete, asphalt, natural ground, ice, snow, gravel, or shingled roofs.
• Use of ladders and scaffolding may be required.
• Exposure to occasional vibration, noise, fumes/odors from paint, chlorine, insecticides, and caustic materials.
• Exposure to dust and mists during outdoor duties.
• Work hazards include climbing ladders and scaffolds, exposure to severe weather, electrical wiring and currents, heavy lifting, working on rooftops, and slick surfaces.
• Work may be performed at a correctional facility with exposure to noise, possible contact with inmates, and dangerous situations that could involve serious bodily injury and other health hazards.
• Daily exposure to human waste.

Equipment, Tools, and Materials

• Uses a wide variety of hand tools and power tools.
• Work aids include ladders, scaffolds, tape measures, dollies, hoists, toolboxes, volts/ohm/milliammeters, flashlights, keys, soldering torches, hydraulic lifts, winches, cutting and brazing torches, shovels, rakes, lawn mowers, clippers, snow removal machines, and painting equipment.
• Uses various electrical parts, appliance parts, and plumbing parts, as well as screws, nails, bolts, washers, etc.

Mental Functions

• Applies knowledge of basic mathematics in making measurements and calculations.
• Applies knowledge of tools, machines, materials, and methods used in duties.
• Applies knowledge of electricity, plumbing, carpentry, and general maintenance.
• Makes independent work decisions when advice from supervisor is not readily available.
• Works and communicates effectively with different kinds of people in a variety of situations.

Physical Functions

• Lifts up to 75 pounds from ground to waist, shoulder, or overhead level occasionally; uses hoists and dollies to move equipment and supplies up to 150 pounds.
• Pushes and pulls 50 to 75 pounds occasionally.
• Climbs stairs, ladders, and scaffolding as needed; maintains balance while climbing.
• Stands/walks for up to two hours at a time, totaling five to six hours per day.
• Kneels for up to one hour at a time, totaling two hours per day.
• Crawls, crouches, or works in a prone position for short periods as needed.
• Bends at the waist and twists/rotates waist frequently; lifting may also require bending.
• Works with arms extended or bent, up to eight hours per day.
• Uses hands and fingers to grasp/manipulate equipment and materials bilaterally.
• Requires finger dexterity for repair and maintenance of electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and general problems.
• Coordinates use of hands and eyes in performing essential duties.
• Adequate sense of smell, hearing, and tactile sense required.
• Must react quickly to avoid accidents while performing essential duties.

Pay

Pay during probation: $26.44 per hour. After probation: $26.97 per hour.
