McHarg Fellowship - 2027-2028

About the role

The McHarg Fellowship is a teaching and research fellowship awarded competitively to an emerging voice in landscape architecture and related fields. The selected fellow is expected to be in residence at the University of Pennsylvania Weitzman School of Design in Philadelphia full-time for one academic year, from August through May. The purpose is to provide support for research, teaching, and mentorship by faculty during the fellowship term.

Responsibilities

• Be in residence from August 1, 2027 through May 31, 2028.
• Undertake teaching and research at the Weitzman School of Design.
• Teaching roles may include assisting in the August Summer Institute and teaching a core landscape design studio in the fall semester (either Studio I or Studio III), as well as a new elective seminar related to the fellow’s research in the spring semester.
• Conduct concurrent research and participate in the intellectual and cultural life of the school.
• Present work-in-progress to the Department of Landscape Architecture faculty at least once during the fellowship.
• Make a public presentation of their work during the spring semester.

• Shared research carrels in the Fisher Fine Arts Library may be available.
• Shared office space in other areas of the school may be available.
• Access to all Penn libraries, the Weitzman Fabrication Lab, and the Architectural Archives.
• The fellowship includes access to ACA affordable insurance coverages.

Pay

$75,000 paid as salary to the fellow and an additional $4,000 discretionary stipend for travel, research, and exhibition-related expenses.

Requirements

• A professionally accredited bachelor’s degree or master’s degree in landscape architecture (or the international equivalent) is required.
• Graduate or undergraduate level teaching experience in landscape architecture is preferred but not required.

Review of applications will begin on January 1, 2027, and continue until the position is filled. The fellowship begins August 1, 2027.
