Responsibilities
- Delivers advanced, comprehensive oncology nursing care across the continuum, including complex assessments, high-acuity interventions, and individualized care planning in alignment with evidence-based standards.
- Exercises independent clinical judgment to conduct thorough patient evaluations, interpret diagnostic findings, and implement provider-directed treatment plans involving chemotherapy, immunotherapy, cellular therapies, and blood product administration.
- Applies expertise in hematopoietic stem cell transplant and immune effector cell therapies, ensuring safe handling, preparation, infusion, and post-procedure monitoring in accordance with institutional and national guidelines.
- Serves as a clinical subject matter expert in oncology infusion practices, symptom management, adverse event recognition, and escalation of care, ensuring optimal patient outcomes.
- Collaborates proactively with medical providers, pharmacists, and interdisciplinary care teams to coordinate diagnostics, follow-up care, and transitions between inpatient, outpatient, and specialty services.
- Provides direct patient education and therapeutic communication to patients and families, including expectations of therapy, follow-up care, and discharge instructions.
- Provides patient and caregiver education on complex treatment regimens, side effect management, and advance care directives, using therapeutic communication techniques tailored to health literacy and cultural sensitivity preferences.
- Supports clinical documentation excellence, ensuring regulatory compliance, accuracy in EMR charting, and adherence to cancer-specific core measures and safety protocols.
- Enhances teamwork and unit culture by fostering collaboration, offering assistance, and engaging in peer-to-peer accountability to improve outcomes in patient safety, satisfaction, and employee engagement.
- Uses clinical judgment to assess and modify care for complex patients, ensuring coordination with the interprofessional team and maintaining accurate medical records.
- Supports innovation in care delivery by identifying opportunities for process optimization, contributing to shared governance initiatives, and participating in performance improvement projects aligned with department goals.
- Contributes to departmental goals by managing time effectively, reducing incidental overtime, supporting patient flow, and helping meet financial and operational targets.
- Performs additional duties as assigned to support patient care and clinic operations.
Qualifications
- Demonstrates the skills and competencies required to complete duties safely and perform the assigned job, determined through ongoing skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations.
- Uses critical thinking skills and clinical judgment to work autonomously as defined by the Nurse Practice Act.
- Uses therapeutic communication to establish relationships with patients, families, and the interprofessional team and collaborate on the plan of care.
- Communicates clearly and professionally with patients, physicians, family members, and co-workers, applying customer service principles and positive language to enhance interactions.
- Able to function independently and exercise judgment in interactions with physicians, interprofessional care team, and patients and their families.
- Strong assessment, organizational, and problem-solving skills, as evidenced by the capacity to prioritize multiple tasks and role components in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills to convey information clearly and concisely.
- Able to analyze information logically to coordinate work efficiently within schedule constraints while managing emergent requirements promptly.
- Participate as an integral part of the interdisciplinary healthcare team in providing the highest quality of care to the patient.
- Experience operating electronic medical records systems and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.).
- Education: Associate’s degree- Required
- Licenses & Certifications: RN Registered Nurse State Licensure – Required, BLS Basic Life Support – Required, BMTCN Blood And Marrow Transplant Certified Nurse - Preferred
