Materials Process Technician
About the role
Tempo is a San Diego-based company developing thermochemical energy storage (TCES) systems for energy-intensive industries. Our platform allows industrial operators to shift energy use over time and enables the electrification of high-temperature industrial heat at a cost advantage compared to fossil fuels.
Responsibilities
Prepare, batch, mix, and form materials for testing
Support synthesis activities across R&D and larger-scale batches
Maintain consistency and repeatability across sample batches
Operate lab equipment including TGA, SEM, Dilatometer, PSA, and Pycnometer (training available)
Perform density, porosity, and resistivity measurements
Record and organize experimental data accurately
Set up and monitor experiments under engineer guidance
Follow test procedures and escalate issues as needed
Maintain lab cleanliness, organization, and safety standards
Support fabrication and assembly of energy storage components for testing
Assist with calibration, routine maintenance, and inventory management of lab equipment
Follow all safety protocols for chemical and high-temperature operations
Requirements
2–5+ years of hands-on experience in a laboratory or manufacturing environment
Experience working with lab equipment and material processing
Strong attention to detail and reliability
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with lab instruments such as TGA, SEM, dilatometer, PSA, pycnometer
Experience with powder handling or ceramic processing
Familiarity with high-temperature furnaces
Qualifications
Hands-on capability demonstrated through a practical skills assessment
Job Status and Compensation
This is a Temp to Full-Time Hire position with a 30-day temporary period. An assessment will be conducted at the end of the 30 days to evaluate for a full-time offer. The US base salary range for this full-time position is $24/hour to $26/hour + equity + benefits. Tempo participates in E-Verify.
