About The Department

Material Source partners with the School of the Art Institute of Chicago to obtain supplies for its art-making facilities. The department operates multiple storefronts and storage spaces, providing easy access to art materials across campus. The position involves overseeing these operations.

Responsibilities

  • Staff Administration
    • Hires, trains, supervises, and provides leadership for student employees.
    • Schedules student workers to maintain regular hours.
    • Reconciles Point of Sale (POS) transactions and investigates discrepancies.
    • Provides additional training to students as needed.
  • Orders and Delivery Coordination
    • Plants orders for materials throughout the semester.
    • Manages logistics of ordering, receiving, and distributing bulk materials.
    • Collaborates with vendor and contractor staff to ensure materials are received and moved safely.
    • Assists in distribution of stock to storefronts.
  • Branding and Appearance
    • Maintains consistent branding for Material Source.
    • Maintains storefronts and ensures items are properly packaged, labelled, and ready for customers.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • One to two years of relevant experience in a visual arts studio, university art department, or similar environment.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and customer service skills.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to drive.
  • Familiarity with Word, Excel, and database software.
  • Familiarity with a variety of art making and construction materials.
  • Physical requirements include almost daily lifting up to 100 lbs., frequent bending, twisting, pushing, and climbing.
