Material/Process Inspector I or II - North Tarrant Area Office

Performs material tests and manufacturing process inspections in laboratories, plants, and/or at points of supply. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Responsibilities

Material/Process Inspector I

  • Conducts nuclear density tests on subgrade, base, and asphaltic concrete pavement.
  • Conducts pavement evaluations in the field.
  • Coordinates test and inspection results with engineers, inspectors, and material producers and suppliers.
  • Maintains a diary of inspection or test details.
  • Performs tests and inspection duties.
  • Records test data on worksheets and performs calculations to convert raw data into specific units of measurement.
  • Reports test results to field construction personnel and may assist in determining cause for material problems.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Material/Process Inspector II

  • Handles material or production problems referred by less experienced inspectors.
  • Prepares and maintains inspection or test reports and issues material reports.
  • Reviews plans and material specifications for changes in material requirements.
  • Maintains a diary of inspection or test details.
  • Maintains inventory of test supplies.
  • Performs tests and inspection duties.
  • Records test data on worksheets and performs calculations to convert raw data into specific units of measurement.
  • Reports test results to field construction personnel and may assist in determining cause for material problems.
  • Secures, logs in, and prepares samples of raw materials or manufactured materials at various stages of production for testing.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: High School Graduate or equivalent in general high school studies.
  • Material/Process Inspector I Experience: No experience required (experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent).
  • Material/Process Inspector II Experience: 1 year of laboratory work, material inspection, or other engineering-related work (experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent).

Licenses and Certifications

  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Competencies

Material/Process Inspector I
  • Performing calculations using algebra, trigonometry, and geometry.
  • Using computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems.
  • Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others.
  • Exercises logic and reasoning to define problems, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; makes decisions that support business objectives and goals.
Material/Process Inspector II
  • Materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance.
  • Applicable testing methods, processes, and procedures.
  • Safely using, operating, and maintaining applicable equipment.
  • Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others.
  • Conducting laboratory tests.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Required to work weekends and holidays.
  • Required to work hours other than 8 to 5.
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment provided by employer and comply with all safety requirements.
  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.
  • This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.

This position is located in the TxDOT Fort Worth District at the Euless Area Engineer Office in Euless, TX. The role involves working on a wide variety of construction and maintenance projects related to roadways and bridges within the area.
