About the Role
A Material Handler safely and efficiently moves product and material in the production area, warehouse, or shipping and receiving using a forklift and other material handling equipment. This role is also responsible for organizing material and maintaining cleanliness of the plant floor.
Responsibilities
- Operate sit-down forklift, clamp truck (process-specific), and manual and/or electric pallet jack to safely transport product and material among loading, processing, and storage areas, and to load and unload trucks.
- Place an empty gaylord (process-specific) for each zone at the start of the shift and as needed during the shift.
- Load and unload product and material manually or mechanically from pallets or skids for transport to designated areas.
- Pick, wrap, and stage orders to be shipped, and create, generate, and attach labels as required.
- Use the Warehouse Management System (WMS) to maintain transactions that validate the processing and disposition of product and materials sent to the warehouse.
- Use an RF scanner to scan transactions into the system.
- Assist with training new warehouse employees.
- Assist with daily, monthly, and year-end cycle counts.
- Perform and document daily inspections of forklifts and other material handling equipment, and follow reporting procedures to communicate and resolve maintenance or safety issues.
- Record data on specified forms and complete required documentation.
- Perform housekeeping and sanitation tasks to maintain a clean and orderly work area.
- Comply with all company policies and procedures, including GMP, PPE, HACCP, and JSA regulations.
- Ensure product safety, quality, regulatory compliance, and legality of all products produced and sold.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent; previous work-related skill, knowledge, and experience required.
- Minimum of one year of forklift experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Ability to use an RF scanner for WMS transactions and ensure accuracy of inventory.
- Ability to operate manual and/or electric pallet jacks.
- Ability to read, understand, and comprehend documents such as safety rules, forklift operating and maintenance instructions, material handling, and quality procedure documents.
- Ability to communicate with supervisors and others in the work area.
- Basic mathematics skills (e.g., counting).
Working Environment
- Required PPE: safety glasses with side shields, hearing protection, and steel-toed shoes; task-specific PPE may also be required.
- The manufacturing plant is not environmentally controlled; changes in humidity and temperature occur throughout the year.
Physical Demands
- May continuously remain in a stationary position, bend, and use hands and fingers to operate controls.
- Frequently use arms to reach.
- Occasionally push, pull, and communicate.
- Occasionally move and position up to 50 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
