Duties And Responsibilities
- Be on deck 15 minutes prior to practice starting.
- Clock in and out each shift.
- Prevent accidents by encouraging situations that are within established safety procedures.
- Stimulate interest in the program with participants and maintain good public relations.
- Provide 2 – 3 levels of workouts to participants; advanced, intermediate, and novice.
- Maintain a safe workout environment and be aware of overexertion, hyperventilation, dehydration, breath control guidelines, muscle injury, and other physical difficulties.
- Learn all the names of the swimmers and assess their abilities.
- Provide instruction in stroke technique, starts, and turns.
- Take attendance at all practices.
- Set up and take down for all workouts (e.g., lane lines and equipment), with the help of the lifeguard.
- Notify the Aquatic Director when unable to be at a scheduled class and find a qualified coaching sub.
- Have workouts with the class roster available for sub.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
- Previous coaching experience or prior participation in Masters program, preferred.
- Possess current First Aid and CPR/AED certifications or obtain within 30 days of hire.
- Lifeguard certification preferred, can be obtained within months of hire.
- Demonstrate a positive attitude with people of all abilities.
- Demonstrate effective leadership and organizational abilities.
- Have an understanding and appreciation for the YMCA and its philosophies and beliefs.
- Highly motivated and willing to work independently.
- Possess excellent communication skills.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Programs including Word and Excel is preferred.
- Flexibility is essential.
Physical Abilities And Working Conditions
- Work is completed in an office setting and includes frequent use of a computer and other office machinery or equipment such as a calculator, copy machine, telephone, etc.
- Regularly move about inside and out of the office to effectively communicate with YMCA staff and swimmers on the pool deck from the office.
- Work is completed in a pool environment and includes:
- Must be a proficient swimmer.
- Must be able to work in a warm, humid environment.
- Must be able to perform rescues according to facility standards.
- Must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time.
- Must be able to frequently transport up to 20 lbs of equipment around the pool area.
- Must be able to remain in 81 degree water for any given period of time, if needed.
- Must be physically fit to perform all job duties.
