About the Department
The North Carolina State University Police Department is responsible for providing the most reasonable level of safety and security for the protection of life and property of students, faculty, staff, and visitors of the campus community. The department operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round with sworn officers, non-sworn full-time employees, and part-time employees.
Responsibilities
- Patrol campus and investigate complaints and violations of State laws and local ordinances.
- Develop and implement preventative patrol techniques to deter crime and promote effective safety and security practices.
- Perform specialized duties to enhance campus safety and security.
- Model courteous engagement and outstanding customer service with faculty, staff, students, and visitors while ensuring adherence to safety principles and laws.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High School diploma or GED from an appropriately accredited institution.
- Minimum of 6 years of experience as a sworn local, state, or federal law enforcement officer (reduced by 1 year with an advanced degree such as JD, Masters, or Doctorate).
- Current certification from NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer or certification eligible within the specified timeframe.
- Must meet the minimum State standards for employment.
- Must successfully complete a department orientation course, a department field training program during the probationary period, and the state-mandated probationary period.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Valid driver’s license required.
Qualifications by Level
- Master Officer I: Minimum of 6 years of experience as a sworn law enforcement officer, Intermediate Certification, and a high school diploma or GED.
- Master Officer II: Minimum of 3 years of experience as a Master Officer (9 years total in law enforcement), Intermediate Certification, and a high school diploma or GED.
- Master Officer III: Minimum of 6 years of experience as a Master Officer (12 years total in law enforcement), Intermediate Certification, and a high school diploma or GED.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate’s degree or higher education level.
- Experience in a higher education public safety or campus police department.
- Experience in a CALEA or IACLEA accredited department.
- 80 percent score on annual firearms qualification.

Schedule
Rotating permanent 12-hour shifts once out of Field Training.
Additional Information
- This position is designated as a Mandatory Employee as defined in University Regulation 04-20-07.
- Mandatory designation for adverse weather and emergency events including fire/explosions, medical emergencies, hazardous material incidents, transportation accidents, evacuations/natural hazards, utilities/infrastructure failure, and threats of violence/terrorism/interpersonal emergencies.
