Mass Spectrometrist

About the role

This position is for a staff scientist specializing in mass spectrometry. Under the supervision of the CBIC Director, the staff scientist will manage technical and scientific tasks essential to the mass spectrometry facility’s operations and guide projects within the research core by managing experimental design and data analysis. The position will provide training and/or guidance to core users contributing to the development of experimental protocols. CBIC staff scientists maintain and operate the center’s instruments and provide training and support to allow researchers to operate these instruments themselves, as appropriate.

Responsibilities

• Provide advanced training and guidance to users of the research core.
• Collaborate with researchers on experimental design, execution, data analysis, and troubleshooting within the research core.
• Manage and oversee research projects within the research core.
• Lead the implementation and optimization of advanced techniques and methodologies and develop standard operating procedures for research core services.
• Analyze and interpret complex scientific data, generating meaningful insights and recommendations.
• Assist in the selection, acquisition, and maintenance of research core equipment.
• Stay updated with emerging research trends and technologies. Participate in professional development activities and scientific conferences.
• Contribute scientific data for manuscript preparation and grant proposals.
• Contribute to the training and mentoring of junior staff members.
• Manage vendor relationships, negotiate contracts, and evaluate new technologies for optimal procurement processes.
• Contribute to education and outreach activities within the core, including tours and events.
• Provide user training and expert advice, service operation and custom analyses, as well as maintenance and oversight of CBIC mass spectrometers.
• Assist with new instrument acquisitions and upgrades and provide oversight and support for other instrumentation as needed.
• Collaborate with university research teams and faculty members on research, grants, reports, presentations, and publications to support the CBIC’s training and research missions.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline and four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of skills, education, and experience.
• Demonstrated broad knowledge and hands-on training in the theory and practice of mass spectrometry, including practical experience operating, maintaining and/or repairing mass spectrometers.
• Strong communication skills and ability to effectively train users and staff on proper procedures and methods for using mass spectrometers as well as processing and interpreting mass spectrometry data.
• Demonstrated skill and understanding of state-of-art mass spectrometry including the ability to provide technical support for collaborative design and execution of modern mass spectrometry methods.
• Ability to repair, maintain and modify scientific instruments.
• Computer skills for instrument operation and data analysis.

Preferred Qualifications

• PhD in Chemistry or related field.
• Good interpersonal and communication skills to facilitate working with faculty and students to assist them in operating instruments and interpreting data.
• Knowledge and ability to work with other instrumentation such as solution biophysics and/or optical spectroscopy, including operating and maintaining these instruments and associated computers and software.

Pay

Salary range: $68,000.00 - $120,500.00.
