Job Description
Join the Naval Nuclear Laboratory team in a Mason role! Perform building and ground maintenance work pertaining to repair and replacement of masonry building structures. Work involves performance of excavations, surface preparation, repair, and resurfacing. Work areas include but are not limited to paved and unpaved roads, concrete, asphalt, plaster, masonry, etc. Operation of mobile heavy equipment is required for these site operations and repair activities. Responding to trouble calls related to immediate issues to help maintain continuity of operations. Identify and develop improvements to existing facilities or methods of operation.Duties
- Determine material requirements and select appropriate materials to perform a job.
- Receive written or oral instructions from supervisor. Work from complex drawings and engineering sketches.
- Follow equipment data sheet or job specification requirements.
- Perform masonry work on various building structures including but not limited to brick, block, mortar, speed tile, roads and walkways.
- Mixing, placement and finishing of concrete and mortar as needed.
- Lay brick in horizontal, vertical and arched surfaces as required.
- Lay out, cut and apply ceramic and glazed tile for shower stalls or similar application.
- Repair concrete floor surfaces using synthetic-type industrial products or topcoat applications.
Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill
- A high school or vocational school graduate or the equivalent with the ability to read, write and perform general mathematics of the variety usually learned in a high school or vocational school course.
- Must pass a periodic physical examination.
- Completion of a state accredited skilled trades program resulting in an educational degree or equivalent in the field of this position with 4 years of experience.
- Completion of a state approved certified apprenticeship program resulting in qualification of Journeyman or equivalent in the field of this position with 4 years of experience.
Preferred Skills
- Preferred to possess a Journeyman qualification from a recognized trade union in the field of this position.
- Experience operating heavy equipment.
- Knowledge of industrial safety procedures.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
- Strong problem-solving ability.
- Ability to work independently and with teams.
