Mason

Capital Planning and Facilities (CPF) works to ensure that IU campuses are beautiful, functional, and sustainable, supporting excellence in teaching, learning, research, and community engagement across the entire university. Facility Operations, a unit within CPF, maintains the physical campus to support research, teaching, and learning at Indiana University Bloomington.

Responsibilities

• Study blueprints, drawings, plans, or sketches to construct, maintain, and repair a variety of masonry structures, such as walls, steps, walkways, concrete pads, floors, curbs, and exterior and interior surfaces and coatings.
• Shoot grade and lay out site for pouring of footings and foundations.
• Construct forms, supports, and bracing systems.
• Mix cement, sand, aggregate, additives, and water to produce concrete, grout, mortar, or slurry using hoe, trowel, shovel, or power mixing equipment.
• Spread, level, and smooth concrete using rake, shovel, hand or power trowel, hand or power screed, and float.
• Mold expansion joints and edges using edging tools, jointers, and straight edge.
• Mix and/or apply surface coatings such as sealer, curing and hardening agents, masonry stains, and colorings.
• Lay and bind building materials such as brick, ceramic tile, concrete block, cinder block, glass block, and terra cotta block with mortar and other substances.
• Break or cut bricks, blocks, and rough and irregular stone to size using trowel edge, hammer, chisel, or power saw.
• Calculate angles and courses and determine vertical and horizontal alignment of courses.
• Determine and implement the best layout to achieve a desired pattern.
• Repair and finish mortar joints between stones, bricks, or blocks of masonry wall. Remove mortar to specified depths using raker, hammer, chisel, power saw, and compressed air. May use mortar bag to force mortar into joints.
• Clean and prepare surfaces.
• Mix plaster, stucco, and other compounds to desired consistency and apply to walls, ceilings, or partitions of buildings using trowels, brushes, or spray guns.
• Caulk windows, doors, or cracks in wall with caulking gun.
• Perform other general building maintenance as needed.
• Participate in the training of apprentices and/or other workers as needed.
• Drive vehicle as needed.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED).
• 5 years of verifiable journey-level experience in the masonry field.
• Valid driver's license and ability to be insured by Indiana University upon date of hire.

Pay

$28.37 per hour
