Mission
Maskers ensure the application of painting or other coatings is exact - precisely what our customers require. They review blueprints to accurately identify the prep work needed for processing parts, and apply masking (tape, paper, plugs) to prevent the application of paint or other processing on surfaces that shouldn't be coated. They verify part cleanliness and damage-free surfaces to ensure product quality and customer satisfaction.
Essential Functions
- Reads and interprets blueprints to determine required work procedures and identify materials required
- Uses cleaning fluids, solvents, brushes, scrapers, sandpaper, cloth, and/or steam to clean surfaces of workpieces in preparation for coating
- Follows established work instructions and safety procedures including the proper use of all required personal protective equipment (PPE) and the use, storage, and disposition of hazardous materials
- Uses precision measuring tools such as calipers or other gauges to determine areas needed for masking according to blueprints or drawings
- Uses precision cutting tools such as x-acto style blades/knives to accurately shape masking materials, including tiny materials and hard-to-reach areas requiring manual dexterity with sometimes very limited access
- Applies masking or other such materials to ensure surfaces are protected during processing procedures
- Rinses, drains, and/or wipes coated workpieces to remove excess coating material or to facilitate the setting of finish coats on workpieces
- Demasks and cleans parts as required after coatings or processes have been performed, paying close attention to ensure masking materials applied were correct and adequate in meeting customer/drawing requirements
- Performs other incidental duties as may be required
Physical Demands and Work Environment
- Regularly stand and walk throughout the facility
- Sit for long periods to perform job duties
- Regularly lift, carry (short distances), and push/pull up to 50 pounds using peer assistance and/or other lifting & material-handling equipment for heavy or oversized parts
- Frequently reaches overhead and reaches out or down to perform duties
- Sometimes climb steps, stairs, or ladders
- Sometimes bend, crawl, stoop, squat, or kneel
- Frequently uses hand or fingers to manually inspect parts, apply and remove masking materials, and operate precision cutting tools
- Accurately distinguish colors
- Visual acuity to interpret drawings, sketches, and readings on gauges and other measuring devices, and to ensure precise application of masking materials
Work Environment
- Excessive noise (hearing protection required)
- Moderate noise
- Dust, smoke, mist, fumes/vapors
- Extreme temperatures
- Hazardous equipment including forklifts, hand tools, sharp blades, cranes or other lifting devices, and other equipment used in a machine shop environment
Qualifications
- A high school diploma or GED equivalent is required
- Experience in precision masking or similar is preferred
