Mascot/Handler (Part-time, Temporary)

About the role

This position represents Wake Tech Community College as the official Eagle mascot Talon or as Talon’s handler. You will work with other performers and handlers to create a positive experience for audiences at sporting events, community events, or general college representation events.

Responsibilities

• Represent Wake Tech school spirit and engage audience members through expressive movement.
• Interact with students, children, alumni, and community members in a positive, energetic, and friendly manner.
• As mascot performer, communicate non-verbally through body language and gestures.
• Respond promptly and professionally to communications with other performers, handlers, the coordinator, and college officials.
• As handler, assist the mascot performer by preventing physical hazards, providing breaks, and ensuring respect for the mascot.
• Create and perform signature gestures, skits, or routines to enhance audience engagement.
• Pose for photos and videos with students, alumni, families, and staff.
• Maintain the mascot costume, report any damage after each use, and follow all safety guidelines (e.g., hydration, rest breaks).
• Remain in character during all appearances.
• Collaborate with marketing and communications projects.

Requirements

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• At least 18 years of age.
• Ability to fit the mascot costume.
• Must pass a criminal background check.
• Valid Driver’s license and approval required by the College’s liability insurance carrier.

Skills

• Positive attitude, collaborative mindset, flexibility, responsibility, professionalism, and commitment.
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and lift/carry up to 25 lbs for long periods in various weather and terrain conditions (heat/cold, uneven surfaces).
• Ability to travel for events and programs.
• Strong non-verbal communication skills (pantomime, reading social cues).
• Clear verbal communication to advocate for the mascot performer when needed.

Preferences

• Experience as a mascot performer or handler.
• Current Wake Tech student.

Schedule

Events take place during weekdays, mornings, afternoons, evenings, weekends, and may be indoors or outdoors in extreme heat or cold.
