About the Opportunity

Monumental Impact is a 501(c)(3) Colorado nonprofit serving high school students through adults as a community makerspace. Also known as MITEE—Monumental Impact for Technology, Engineering and Entrepreneurship—we connect youth and community members with career pathways in technology, engineering, and entrepreneurship. Through programs, equipment, mentorship, workspace, and real-world experiences, we empower people to explore, create, and compete.

We are looking for Marketing, Media & Communications Volunteers to help us capture and share what's happening throughout our makerspace, programs, projects, events, and community. There is always something happening here—from someone learning a new piece of equipment or building a prototype to interns developing products, robotics teams preparing for competition, or community members sharing their knowledge with others. We need help turning those activities into stories and content that help others understand what Monumental Impact is all about.

You don't need to do everything listed below. We're looking for multiple volunteers with different interests and skills who can contribute as part of our Marketing & Communications Team.

Responsibilities

Depending on your interests and experience, you may help with:

  • Photography & Media
    • Be our "boots on the ground" at the makerspace and community events to capture photos and short videos.
    • Photograph community members working on projects, learning equipment, participating in programs, and collaborating with others.
    • Capture our competitive robotics activities, entrepreneurship efforts, internships, workshops, and community events.
    • Help organize and label photos and other media so they can be easily used by the Marketing & Communications Team.
    • Coordinate with team members to identify upcoming activities and stories worth capturing.
  • Community Stories & Interviews
    • Meet and interview community members about their interests, projects, experiences, and accomplishments.
    • Help develop stories for our Meet Our Community series.
    • Interview makers about something they've designed, built, repaired, or learned.
    • Help develop how-to or technical blog articles that allow community members to share their knowledge with others.
    • Capture quotes, photos, and project details that can be repurposed across our website, newsletter, and social media.
  • Content & Communications
    • Help develop content for social media, newsletters, website updates, events, and community announcements.
    • Turn activities happening within Monumental Impact into interesting and approachable stories.
    • Help maintain consistent messaging across communication channels.
    • Work with team members to identify upcoming programs, events, projects, and accomplishments that should be promoted.
    • Help repurpose content so one good story can be shared appropriately across several communication channels.
  • Graphics & Campaign Materials
    • Create or update graphics for events, programs, social media, and community outreach.
    • Help create content, graphics, and mailing materials for sponsorship and fundraising campaigns.
    • Assist with flyers, handouts, event materials, and other communications.
    • Help organize reusable templates and communications assets so future materials can be created more efficiently.

Requirements

You don't need professional experience in every area above. This opportunity could be a good fit if you:

  • Enjoy storytelling, writing, photography, video, graphic design, or communications.
  • Like talking with people and discovering what they're working on.
  • Can take technical or project information and help make it understandable to a broader audience.
  • Have an eye for interesting moments and stories.
  • Are organized enough to turn photos, interviews, and ideas into usable content.
  • Are comfortable collaborating with volunteers, interns, students, mentors, and functional teams.
  • Can work independently on an assignment while staying connected with the larger team.
  • Are reliable and follow through on the commitments you make.

Experience with photography, videography, journalism, communications, marketing, social media, graphic design, Canva, Adobe tools, WordPress, email marketing, or nonprofit communications is helpful, but not required for every volunteer. We're just as interested in finding someone who's particularly good at one piece of this work as someone who can do several.

Benefits

  • Build or expand a portfolio of real communications work.
  • Meet and tell the stories of people involved in technology, engineering, entrepreneurship, robotics, and making.
  • Gain hands-on experience with nonprofit and community-based communications.
  • Work alongside interns and other volunteers with different skills and experience.
  • Help shape how Monumental Impact tells its story as our community grows.
  • Use your existing skills while learning new tools and approaches.
  • Take ownership of a recurring communication area, campaign, or project if you're interested in greater responsibility.
  • Experienced volunteers may also have opportunities to mentor interns or other community members interested in marketing, media, photography, writing, or communications.

About Monumental Impact

Monumental Impact is a nonprofit community makerspace located in Palmer Lake in the Tri-Lakes area, north of Colorado Springs. Our community brings together high school students, college students, adults, and seniors through hands-on opportunities involving technology, engineering, entrepreneurship, career readiness, competitive robotics, projects, mentorship, and making. Our Marketing & Communications efforts help people outside the makerspace discover these opportunities while helping those already involved stay connected to what's happening.

Schedule

We're flexible and welcome both ongoing and project-based participation. Some volunteers may contribute several hours each month creating content or graphics. Others may primarily attend selected makerspace activities or external events to take photos, conduct interviews, or capture stories. Because much of what we want to communicate happens in the makerspace and at community events, we're especially interested in volunteers who can spend at least some time in person. Writing, editing, graphics, media organization, and other work can often be completed remotely. We'll discuss your interests and availability and determine where you can contribute most effectively.

Location: Palmer Lake, Colorado — Tri-Lakes area, north of Colorado Springs. This role is primarily in-person with some work that can be completed remotely.
