Basics

As a Operations Research Analyst, you will independently conduct or lead research into energy market fundamentals and policy initiatives in the Pacific Northwest, West Coast, and nationally to address economic, strategy and policy questions. You will lead the development of experimental approaches to determining total power portfolio benefit/costs based on projected operational and market strategies. This includes the economic evaluation of the impacts from different power system operations, different levels and types of power sales or purchases, and different levels and types of additional balancing capacity needed to cost effectively support the integration of variable generation resources. You will also lead analysis required to implement complex contracts or support BPA policy decisions (i.e., Pacific NW Coordination Agreement, Non-treaty Storage, Contracts with optionality, etc.). You will serve as a subject matter expert on teams responsible for the development and production of analytical studies. You will maintain contact and work collaboratively with Power Services employees, corporate employees, and consultants as needed. You will communicate verbally and in writing on assigned responsibilities, including technical studies and project reports.

Qualifications

  • Degree: in operations research; or at least 24 semester hours in a combination of operations research, mathematics, probability, statistics, mathematical logic, science, or subject-matter courses requiring substantial competence in college-level mathematics or statistics. At least 3 of the 24 semester hours must have been in calculus.
  • Specialized Experience: Experience 1) developing and utilizing computer models to analyze factors affecting electrical power systems, such as market fundamentals, resource operations, or price forecasting; 2) providing data-driven reports and recommendations to management or subject matter experts; and 3) conducting economic/financial analyses of utility-scale energy generation resources or wholesale power contracts to evaluate portfolio costs and performance.
