About the role

The R/V Lake Guardian, a 180-foot Research Vessel operated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), is seeking a qualified Marine Technician to support its operations. The vessel operates extensively throughout the Great Lakes from April through October and is based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Responsibilities

  • Provide input and logistical support for survey planning, including route planning, equipment purchasing, and sampling gear design and fabrication.
  • Operate scientific equipment in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and monitor data feeds from these devices to the sensor application's workstations.
  • Utilize databases and spreadsheet applications for data input, storage, retrieval, and backup.
  • Enter applicable data into the Great Lakes Environmental Database (GLENDA) application and/or other onboard database systems and applications, including web-based applications.
  • Schedule and perform maintenance and calibration of all scientific instruments/sampling equipment in accordance with manufacturers' specifications and recommendations.
  • Inspect scientific instruments/equipment to ensure proper functioning before surveys.
  • Clean equipment at the end of each sampling survey and between lake traverses to prevent the transport of invasive species or waterborne pathogens.

Requirements

  • Proficient in biological sampling methods, including vertically towed zooplankton nets, benthic grabs, and use of towed equipment for collecting biological samples.
  • Experience deploying, troubleshooting, calibrating, and maintaining scientific equipment specified in this addendum.
  • Knowledge of computers and telecommunications equipment to store, retrieve, and transmit data relevant to shipboard and scientific duties.
  • Minimum education requirement: Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Natural Resources, or a related field with 2 years of relevant experience.
  • Additional duties as shipboard IT support specialist require an Associate or Bachelor of Science degree in Electronics/Electrical Engineering or a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Natural Resources, or a related field with 2 years of relevant experience in IT networking technology or hardware/software engineering.
