Marine Superintendent

About the Role

The Marine Superintendent provides operational leadership for IMT Wheelhouse, ensuring seamless logistics and vessel operations through proactive planning, communication, management, and incident prevention to fulfill customer requirements.

Responsibilities

• Assist vessel moves to ensure efficient use of company equipment and resources; monitor traffic that boats produce; and communicate with docks and other barge customers to coordinate moves.
• Understand boat procedures and Vessel Emergency Response Plan.
• Investigate, review, and provide disciplinary action and future solutions for all vessel and personnel incidents and accidents.
• Inform management of vessel and vessel personnel trends and performance.
• Review, evaluate, approve, and recommend assignments and promotions.
• Work as a team to continually improve the overall abilities of the department and the continued success of Illinois Marine Towing.
• Act as the spokesman for wheelhouse personnel, advocate for their concerns, and ensure all needs are met from both management and employees.
• Respond to and guide wheelhouse personnel in areas of navigation, dispatch orders, CEMS, and safety when necessary.
• Establish and maintain positive employee relations and communications with the entire workforce.
• Assist in the development of skills, leadership, and professional training of licensed mariners.
• Provide presence at all weekly crew change training meetings and conduct classroom training on leadership and policy information.
• Bridge the gap between the vessels and the office.
• Ensure accountability is maintained by captains as the manager of their vessel.
• Represent IMT interest in industry groups and on regulatory committees.
• Perform other duties as required and directed by management.
• Carry out the Business Philosophy, Code of Conduct, and mission of Canal Barge Company and Illinois Marine Towing.

Requirements

• 5-7 years of progressive supervisory experience.
• Safety-conscious, detail-oriented, and able to accomplish work tasks independently.
• Marine transportation experience preferred.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to build strong relationships and work effectively with vessel captains, customers, and crewing departments.
• Strong computer skills.
• Ability to handle multiple tasks and situations simultaneously.
• Strong organizational skills.
• Ability to be self-managed while working effectively as part of a team to meet company goals.
• Knowledge of applicable USCG regulations.
• Master of Towing License.
• Available to work on-call on a rotational basis.
• Undergraduate degree preferred.

Organizational Relationship

The Marine Superintendent reports to the General Manager of Illinois Marine Towing and provides daily supervision to the Crewing Department and all vessel personnel.
