Physical Demands
- Be able to read and write in English
- Calculate and have estimation skills
- Possess good verbal presentation and effective communication skills
- Tolerate repetitive and prolonged postures involving standing, sitting, twisting, squatting, kneeling, stooping, bending, pushing, pulling, stretching, reaching, and reaching to full range from above head to the floor
- Frequent use of good dexterity throughout the work period
- Good balance/coordination when walking over uneven and/or slippery surfaces
- Sufficient cardio-respiratory fitness to perform medium-heavy physical labor involving the ability to sit and/or stand for extended time frames, walk for prolonged periods, handle various tools, climb ladders, and climb stairwells
- Subject to adverse weather conditions including rough seas, cold and elevated temperatures, and humid conditions
- Able to lift at least 100 pounds from floor to waist
- Able to lift at least 75 pounds from floor to shoulder
- Able to lift at least 25 pounds from floor to head
- Demonstrate 90 pounds of grip strength in dominant hand and 80 pounds in nondominant hand
- Demonstrate physical demand requirements during initial pre-employment physical and any future physicals while employed
- Repetitively walk the length of the vessel
Responsibilities
- Perform a variety of duties to preserve the painted surfaces of the ship, including daily maintenance, sanitation, and general upkeep of lines, running gear, and cargo-handling gear in a safe operating condition
- Report any shortcomings, inaccuracies, or conflicts in any portion of the MS to the master
- Adhere to and comply with company policies and USCG and environmental regulations
- Work a rotation watch that could involve 8 or 12 hours in a 24-hour period with occasional hours not to exceed 14 consecutive hours
- Clean, paint, and do general housekeeping on the vessel
- Be responsible for handling lines for the mooring of the vessel
- Stand watch for obstructions in the path of the vessel
- Break out, rig, overhaul, and stow cargo-handling gear, stationary rigging, and running gear
- Overhaul lifeboats and lifeboat gear and lower or raise lifeboats with winch or falls
- Paint and chip rust on the deck or superstructure, splicing and repairing cable and ropes using hand tools
- Sweep and mop the vessel's interior
- Possibly be required to assist in the maintenance of ship's gear and decks or watch duties
- Participate in safety and rescue drills for emergency situations
- Provide and/or assist with training
- Assemble rigging to lift and move equipment or material on board the vessel
- Give direction to the crane operator engaged in hoisting using radio or hand signals
- Perform any duty that may be required as part of the training
- Collect, dump, and clean garbage, emptying color-coded receptacles for segregated garbage to the appropriate storage or processing location
