Manufacturing Test Engineer
About the role
The team is responsible for evaluating technologies and identifying supply chain solutions that allow Meta Reality Labs to deliver products to market at scale. The Manufacturing Test Engineer will drive the development and deployment of hardware test systems with manufacturing partners and third-party integrators. You will help define the overall product test strategy, evaluate test equipment and qualification processes, lead and facilitate the integration of test systems into existing data tracking networks and factory control systems. You will design and document new manufacturing equipment with standardization and reliability as a priority, and create test plans for validating existing equipment. You will troubleshoot hardware and software issues on test equipment and automation systems, working independently to plan and execute projects in a cross-functional team environment. Responsibilities include planning the design, development, and implementation of factory test systems, enforcing manufacturability and testability, and ensuring cost-effective designs for testing and automation systems, software, and equipment. This role covers NPI test development and sustaining support of production-released tests and automation systems.
Responsibilities
- Develop and implement the manufacturing test strategy during the NPI and MP phases of the product lifecycle.
- Work with cross-functional teams to design and deploy test solutions.
- Collaborate with the Engineering and Capital Expenditure team to identify suitable suppliers/partners to meet product requirements from technical, supply chain, and manufacturing perspectives.
- Develop test requirements and methodology with the Engineering team, implement manufacturing tests at factory sites, and troubleshoot issues during product development and manufacturing ramp-up.
- Interface directly with Engineering, Supply Chain, Manufacturing, Quality, and vendor teams to assist in developing test procedures, including first article, reliability, environmental, production, and final acceptance testing.
- Work directly with vendor and CM engineers to provide guidance and support in test methods, equipment, and test set-ups.
- Coordinate travel to suppliers (foreign and domestic) to establish technical and manufacturing processes required during product development and volume manufacturing ramp (up to 40% international and domestic travel).
Requirements
- B.S. or M.S. degree in engineering or equivalent experience.
- 4+ years of experience in consumer electronic product development and volume manufacturing or related fields.
- Experience in Camera, Audio, RF, Sensing, Battery, SMT, Display, or Optical testing, with in-depth understanding in one or more of these areas.
- Experience with domestic and/or international consumer electronics vendors and supply chain management.
- Understanding of fundamental considerations for building hardware in development and volume production stages.
- Experience managing detailed test coverages and improving test efficiency in engineering and production phases.
- Experience in test automation and test frameworks to enable comprehensive test coverage.
- Experience managing vendor engineers and technicians, and building teams that deliver effective technical outcomes.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience driving timely execution by setting clear priorities and deadlines with cross-functional partners.
- Experience with module and system test and manufacturing processes, including direct experience managing manufacturing test implementation and execution.
- Demonstrated ability to integrate AI tools to optimize/redesign workflows and drive measurable impact (e.g., efficiency gains, quality improvements).
- Experience defining, developing, and troubleshooting manufacturing test issues.
- Experience building cross-functional relationships at all levels of the organization.
- Demonstrated ongoing AI skill development (e.g., prompt/context engineering, agent orchestration) and staying current with emerging AI technologies.
- Experience in a leadership position and achieving results with minimal supervision.
- Experience adhering to and implementing responsible, ethical AI practices (e.g., risk assessment, bias mitigation, quality and accuracy reviews).
Pay
$144,000/year to $204,000/year + bonus + equity + benefits. Individual compensation is determined by skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
