About the role

This position will plan and coordinate manufacturing processes across support and customer organizations to support our NASA customer on the Marshall Engineering Technicians and Trades Support contract (METTS). The role involves selecting and recommending methods that improve fabrication and assembly efficiency, enhance dimensional accuracy, and reduce machine time and overall production costs.

Responsibilities

  • Make independent interpretations and translations of work orders, drawings, and specifications that may lack details such as dimensions, tolerances, and types of fit and finish.
  • Perform labor in fabrication and assembly processes.
  • Read and understand blueprints, sketches, drawings, sample parts, parts programs, or other work specifications.
  • Detail processes, prices, and estimates based on engineering drawings and evaluation of current capabilities (tools, machines, and personnel).
  • Outline machining processes of surfaces at unusual or compound angles.
  • Work with designers, engineers, and manufacturing personnel in work order and process preparations.
  • Produce plans, estimates, and processes.
  • Plan sequences of operations involving original innovations in setups, attachments, techniques, and tools for complex, non-routine parts and equipment from raw stock of different metals, metal alloys, and other materials.
  • Recommend and use methods and procedures that contribute toward efficiency.

Requirements

  • Ten years of machine shop experience, including advanced shop mathematics.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Experience interpreting work orders, blueprints, drawings, and specifications.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, accomplishing untried tasks, procedures, and prototypes.

Preferred Qualifications

  • CNC Programming experience.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, engineering drawings, part programs, and technical specifications.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision while exercising sound judgment.
  • Advanced knowledge of shop mathematics, including geometry and trigonometry, to calculate compound angles, hole patterns, pitch, lead, and diameters.
  • Experience developing processes, cost estimates, and pricing based on engineering drawings and current manufacturing capabilities.
  • High level of ingenuity, problem-solving ability, and ownership in completing complex assignments.
  • Ability to interpret and translate work orders, drawings, and specifications into efficient manufacturing plans, considering manpower, materials, and tooling.
  • Strong collaboration skills and ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Work Environment

  • Environmentally controlled, heated, and cooled shop area subject to machinery noise.
  • Occasional outdoor work.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to twenty pounds on an occasional basis.
  • Sit or stand for extended periods of time.
  • May require walking, bending, climbing stairs, and navigating shop/machine work areas.

Other

  • This position may require occasional overtime and may include second or third shift support for 24/7 onsite or on-call support based on customer needs and contract requirements.
  • All positions supporting the METTS III contract are contingent upon successful completion of NASA medical screenings at the beginning of employment and annually thereafter.
  • Must meet eligibility for a Public Trust background investigation for government-issued credentials and IT access; applicants must pass a security background check per Redstone Arsenal/MSFC requirements.
  • You will be required to provide two (2) forms of Federal I-9 documents and a REAL ID-compliant identification to gain access to RSA and MSFC. Your name must match on both forms of ID, be original (no copies/digital), and be unexpired.
